Fourth of July Sales-Part I

If you plan on making any final additions to your summer maternity wardrobe, it’s time. The Fourth of July means final sale in fashion-speak and retailers are making their final markdowns before clearing out for the fall collections. Here is a list of what is already on sale:

1. Zappos.com The super shoe site continues to impress me with its maternity collection–my kudos to whomever the new maternity buyer is over there. The site has put a few of its summer maternity pieces on sale, most notably pieces from Maternal America like the Maternal America Skinny Jean, reduced to USD $84. I have never heard anything negative about these jeans, everybody loves them. Zappos also recently added a few basic black maternity bathing suits from Maternal America, like the Classic Josie 2-Piece Tankini in Black. The new maternity suits are not on sale, but are currently available in all sizes. Trust me, a black Maternal America bathing suit in the size you are looking for is quite rare.

2. A Pea in the Pod. I feel compelled to inform you about this sale because there are some really great deals available. Pea in the Pod is perpetually overpriced, but once they cut those prices, they do have great sales. A few of their converted J Brand maternity jeans and trousers are even included in this sale, including the J Brand Houlihan Cargo Pant, which is reduced 50% to USD $125 and the J Brand Cargo Pocket Slim Fit Jeans.

3. Pickles & Ice Cream. The maternity chain is offering decent discounts off lines such as Bellyssima, Boob, Jules et Jim, Olian, Maternal America and the Pickles & Ice Cream collection. Sizes are limited, but there are a few great summer pieces still available if you manage to find your size, including several Prego bathing suits. Sale items are returnable for online store credit only.

4. Nordstrom. Nordstrom starts its half-yearly sale later in the month, but the store has already discounted much of the Spring/Summer 2011 pieces in the maternity boutique. The sale includes numerous comfortable, casual pieces from Splendid’s maternity collection and LA Made’s maternity collection.

5. Milkstars. LA-based nursing designer Milkstars is offering 23.5% off sitewide in honor of America’s 235th birthday. Use promo code “JULY4″ when you check out. Make sure to pick up a pair of the designer’s new “Nancy” pajamas with this discount. Who says you actually have to be nursing to wear nursing pajamas?

6. Blossom Mother and Child. It’s not the 4th of July in the UK, but Blossom has coincidentally launched its summer sale and is offering 50% off much of its gorgeous in-house maternity collection. The Natasha Smocked Maternity Maxi Dress is reduced to GBP 76 (USD $122) and is available in indigo and deep pink.  The sale includes several of Blossom’s black-tie appropriate pieces, so if you have an event this summer or fall, I suggest checking out the sale. Note that Blossom carries numerous non-maternity pieces from outside designers, so make sure you keep that in mind and know what you’re buying.

7/4 Update: Sierra Lane Maternity is offering 25% off the entire site beginning today. If you are still hankering for one of those adorable Ingrid & Isabel maternity bikinis or tankinis, now is the time to buy one for less than the slightly outrageous prices for which they retail.

NOM Maternity Sample Sale Starts Today

Yet another maternity sample sale launches today on Gilt at noon. This time, Gilt is offering a great selection of pieces from NOM Maternity, as well as a few select pieces from Olian, Belabumbum, Egg, and even a few diaper bags and pouches from Rebecca Minkoff. The NOM pieces are definitely the highlight, and the sale includes the must-have, super comfortable NOM maternity cargoes. The discounts cover a wide range but some items are more than 50% off. Nuka Maternity Offers 40% Off In Honor Of America’s Birthday

Los Angeles-based maternity line Nuka Maternity is offering 40% off its entire Spring/Summer 2011 collection in honor of the Fourth of July weekend. Nuka uses absolutely beautiful cottons and silks and for this reason, it is one of my favorite mom-owned maternity lines. Numerous pregnant LA starlets have recently been photographed in Nuka, but these fabrics are so gorgeous, you may be willing to sell out and own the same dress as Tori Spelling.

Nuka’s cotton and silk maxi dresses are my personal favorite, but the line’s tunics and tanks are great basics as well. Nuka’s price points are typically high–not surprisingly, superior quality doesn’t come cheap. But the 40% off promotion brings the cost of a pure silk maternity dress down to less than $120. Ruelala launched its J Brand sample sale just a few minutes ago and as I had hoped, the sale includes several pairs of maternity jeans. The Perfect Fourth Of July Maternity Dress

I have been waiting for weeks to do this posting and with the Fourth of July now officially 10 days away, I think it is time. What are you going to be wearing to your Fourth of July celebration? Hadn’t thought about it, right? Just hoping the long weekend’s events don’t involve swimwear, right?

Shappy Apple’s summer maternity collection includes this absolutely perfect 4th of July Dress. Made from crisp cherry red lightweight poplin, Shabby Apple’s “Finding Out” Maternity Dress includes a festive red, white and blue bow that threads through the back of the dress and ties in the front. The dress has a vintage-style full skirt, hits below the knee, and has pockets on either side. I don’t know if there are many other days of the year I might be willing to wear this dress, as the bow is a bit much. But for the 4th of July, it’s ideal and guarantees you will be the most patriotic pregnant lady at your barbeque. And it’s priced at only $68, which means you can justify buying it for America’s birthday bash and then storing it away for your next pregnant 4th of July holiday.

Shabby Apple runs quite large so do not size up. And make sure to wash this dress in a lingerie bag in the delicate cycle, I have found that Shabby Apple’s cotton does not stand up well to the washing machine.

Paige Premium Designs A Maternity Trouser That Doesn’t Actually Look Like A Maternity Trouser

Continuing with this week’s theme of recommending maternity clothing that might keep you comfortable in the summer heat (when I write comfortable, I use it as a relevant term), I should warn you that I will not be recommending maternity shorts. If you’ve read this blog before, you likely know I do not support maternity shorts. They are, in “short,” not a good look for 99% of pregnant women.

But, cropped trousers are a different story, especially when they look like Paige Premium’s new Maternity Twill Cropped Trouser. These slouchy, slim-cut, ankle-length trousers achieve what few maternity trousers managed to achieve–they don’t actually look like maternity clothing. In fact, women who are not pregnant are also likely to covet these. That is a quite a rare achievement in maternity fashion–when was the last time you wore something you felt like someone who wasn’t pregnant actually wanted to be wearing?

And, these trousers come in two subtle, desirable colors. Both the Serengeti Green pictured here and the darker Wildlife Grey are tasteful neutrals that can be worn with just about anything.

By the way, the absolute best feature of this new style from Paige Premium? You might think it is the cute back-flap pockets, but it is definitely the high-rise, over-the-belly maternity panel. Third trimester readers, take note–you will be able to wear these until the bitter end.

How To Dress For A Pregnant Summer

Summer pregnancies are particularly tough. If the weather itself doesn’t immobilize you inside your air-conditioned home, the inability to find something flattering to wear might. Your go-to slimming maternity jeans are most likely not appealing in July and August, and you’ve finally had to commit your much-loved opaque maternity tights to storage. So, I am going to devote all of this week’s blog postings to my favorite summer maternity fashions. I spent most of my pregnancies in the Middle Eastern desert so I know from whence I write when it comes to surviving the heat while pregnant.

One of my favorite hot weather fashion options during pregnancy? Casual summer trousers. If you have a long, hot third trimester ahead of you this summer, I strongly advise you to invest in a pair of lighweight summer cotton maternity trousers. There is a point in just about every woman’s pregnancy when she no longer wants anyone to see her legs and/or ankles, and 100-plus-degree heat only worsens the situation.

Maternal America’s Summer 2011 line includes a pair of new lightweight Drawstring Cotton Maternity Trousers that are available in this chambray cotton color pictured at left or in a black and white seersucker. These are trousers you can wear with a T-shirt on the weekends, or dress up with a blouse and blazer for the office. They do not have a maternity panel at the top, which makes them an appealing postpartum fashion option (it is sometimes inevitable, but no woman really wants to wear a maternity panel after she’s already given birth).

NOM’s Cotton Belted Maternity Cargo Trouser, available in navy, white, and olive, is also a great option for the summer months. NOM releases a version of this same trouser summer after summer and they should be a maternity fashion staple for anyone pregnant during the summer. I often wore these particular trousers to the beach. When I was too far along for a bathing suit to be an option, I simply rolled these up at the bottom and threw on a maternity tank. Chic, comfortable–and no one was subjected to my bulging varicose veins.

If you are past the pregnancy phase, past the nursing phase, and on to what I call the “shapewear” phase of motherhood, the SPANX Bra-llelujah! I know, it seems so ridiculous to spend that much on a basic black bathing suit, but I suggest you try on one of the Spanx suits on and take a look at yourself in the mirror before you say no. These bathing suits are no joke, they work hard for their money.

Petit Bateau’s Entire Maternity Line Goes on Sale Today

I wrote last week about Petit Bateau’s small, but chic maternity collection. Well, the entire collection went on sale today in Petit Bateau’s online maternity boutique. The reductions range from a mere 20% off the Maternity Mariniere Tunic to a sizeable 60% off this Black V-Neck Wool/Cotton Knit Sweater. It will be fall before you know it and it makes sense to stock up on a maternity basic like this, especially when it is reduced from $150 down to a very appealing $60. The French line’s high quality maternity tees and leggings are also included in the sale.

And make sure you browse the Petit Bateau baby and children’s sale as well. It’s not inexpensive, but Petit Bateau makes incredibly high-quality children’s clothing that simply lasts forever.
