Shoes

There comes a moment in just about every woman’s pregnancy when she is forced to come to terms with the fact that not only does her maternity clothing no longer fit, but her shoes don’t really fit anymore either. For those of us due to give birth during the winter, the “shoe” dilemma is more expansive and pronounced, as sandals are not an option and both shoes and boots are too tight. I reached that very moment about two weeks ago when I realized that not only did my numerous pairs of trusty, knee-high boots feel just a bit too snug, but I couldn’t pull them on over my swollen calves anyway (And, by the way, I’m not going to be talking about Uggs here or ever. This is a serious fashion problem,  but not one so big that I or you should give in to wearing Uggs).

I took to the online boutiques in search a pair of flat boots that I could continue to pair with my leggings, tights and skinny jeans, but that were still hip enough that I wouldn’t dread wearing them every day. The clear winner is the Isabel Marant Jenny boot, a flat, suede ankle boot just released for S/S 2012. This boot has a slouchy look that is so very French and casually chic, you can’t help but feel you have outsmarted cruel Mother Nature when you pull them on.  Yes, you ‘ve gained 50 pounds and can’t quite get your own underwear on anymore, but you’ve still managed to complete your maternity ensemble with effortlessly fabulous footwear.

The “Jenny” boot is available in two neutral colors, taupe and anthracite, so you should have just about every outfit covered with one pair of these boots. Isabel Marant does not design shoes in half sizes so you will, of course, need to go one size up from your regular shoe size. The Jenny boots are available here in the United States at net-a-porter.com (anthracite) or from Barney’s (taupe) for USD $580. But with a European designer like Isabel Marant, you will actually save money by ordering them directly from Europe. Matches Fashion has the very same boots available in taupe for USD $429–even with the $45 international shipping charge and a potential 10% U.S. duties charge, you will still come out ahead. Net-a-Porter’s UK site has the Jenny boots available in both anthracite and taupe for USD $517 (including shipping and duties).

A quick Sunday afternoon post (which I am able to do because all 4 of the boys are napping, an extremely rare occurrence), but I just want to offer you two quick weekend online shopping tips:

1. Bump Brooklyn just notified me they have added more Fragile Maternity pieces to their online boutique. Hannah at Bump tells me she is having problems posting the Fragile line because the pieces sell out before she can manage to get them onto a mannequin and take a photo. Shop today if you want in on this luxury Belgian maternity line, Bump is currently the only US-based retailer carrying it.

2. It is so hard to be surrounded by all of these spring sales and not be able to find anything that fits. But there is a remedy for that–shoes. I just bought these Pedro Garcia satin espadrilles in the Bergdorf Goodman sale and they are just incredibly comfortable. And, most importantly, they are ideal for the pregnant foot. Having carried 31 lbs worth of baby in the past 5 years, my feet are permanently pregnant, i.e., very flat, very wide, truly unattractive to look at, and a full 2 sizes bigger than they were before I started birthing babies (Many, many people told me my feet would shrink once the pregnancies were over. They were wrong). These espadrilles are forgiving and therefore ideal for wider/swollen feet, and they are on sale for USD $195 at Bergdorf’s in a host of fun summer colors.

If you scroll through the three years of archives I’ve accumulated on this blog, you’ll find very few postings about shoes. This is curious to many people who know me, as I am a complete shoe addict. Occasionally, I have recommended a pair of extraordinarily comfortable and forgiving flats, but I tend to steer away from recommending shoes to pregnant women. A pregnant woman will inevitably turn to what’s most familiar and comfortable for her in the footwear department, be it high heels, knee-high boots, flats, or even the dreaded Uggs.

This posting then will be the first time I recommend a pair of high heels here on this blog. I cannot resist, however, because my new Kate Spade Licorice Suede Pumps are without a doubt, the most comfortable pair of high heels I have ever owned. And I write this as a woman who really knows shoes, perhaps even better than I know maternity clothing. Before buying these, I would have recognized Mr. Blahnik as the undeniable king of the pregnancy-friendly heel. But I now stand corrected–and for about half the price of a pair of Blahniks, by the way.

The Licorice Suede Pumps do have obvious appeal–they have a 4″ heel and come in a wide array of appealing winter colors including black, camel, as well as navy, purple, and loden green. But they have two features that are particularly ideal for a pregnant woman with a swollen foot: 1) they are made from suede, which is quite forgiving, and 2) both the vamp and the upper on this heel are exceptionally high, allowing for very good foot coverage in the front of the shoe as well as on the sides, preventing the dreaded foot muffintop. No need to worry about having your enlarged foot ballon out the sides of these shoes, because the cut of the shoe doesn’t allow for it.

Maybe you’re a diehard heel girl who can’t imagine wearing flats to that Christmas cocktail party, despite being 39 weeks pregnant. Or maybe you think I am absolutely nuts for suggesting a pair of 4″ heels as maternity wear. I definitely see both sides of the argument.  The Kate Spade Licorice Suede Pumps are available for USD $285 here at Shopbop in purple, navy and green and here at Shopbop in black and camel (the camel is almost completely sold out).  They are also on sale in this curious pink color here at Piperlime for USD $199.99.

SS_Portia_Pink_3x3[1]After I had my first son, I thoroughly researched what kind of shoes I should buy for him to ensure he was wearing the perfect type of soles and had the ideal amount of ankle support to begin walking as soon as he was ready.  My research led me straight to Pedi-Ped, and I purchased a pair of their infant walking shoes and waited and waited and waited for him to walk in them.  In the end, I think he finally got around to walking in a pair of dirty old baby socks, dispelling my naive notions that the shoes have anything at all to do with it.  My subsequent experiences have only confimed that fact–they’re going to walk when they’re good and ready regardless of what footwear choices you’ve made for them.

25PEDIPED_0022[1]But I still love pedipeds because they are adorable and because, although there isn’t necessarily any research out there to prove this, pedipeds satisfy the primary criteria you should be considering when buying baby and toddler footwear: 1) they are easy to put on and take off, 2) they are durable, 3) they are reasonably priced, and 4) kids think they are comfortable and don’t seem to throw temper tantrums when you tell them it is time to put on their shoes.

pediped released its new Spring 2010 Collection for boys and girls yesterday.  Both the Original line, pedipeds’ collection for infants, and the Flex line, the toddler collection, are available on pedipeds’ website here.  The new collection is as adorable as past collections, but does include some new features, such as several pairs of shoes that are specifically designed to be machine washable.  How great is that?  I am going to add “machine washable” to the list of primary criteria above.

SS'10 Couture (1)Some of the new shoes are not available for purchase until March 5th, but pediped is a fan of Pregnant Fashionista and is offering a free pair of pedipeds Originals to two PF readers.  Just send me an email at caroline@pregnantfashionista.com if you are interested in being included in a drawing which I’ll do next Friday, February 19th. If you win, you’ll be able to request a pair of girls’ or boys’ shoes and request a particular size, and pedipeds will send them directly to you.

annabootsLittle Suri wears them, little Harlow wears them, and now your soon-to-arrive little girl can wear them too. I’m talking about Petite Maloles, the adorable line of baby shoes from Spanish footwear designer Maloles. Maloles women’s shoes are my favorite shoes to buy and wear during pregnancy because they are truly the most comfortable flats out there.  And because they are completely surrounded in elastic and made from very impeccable quality materials, they expand as you expand.  I am always looking for places to buy Maloles online for myself, but they are quite difficult to find and they sell out quickly.

Petite Maloles are also difficult to find in a good range of styles and sizes, but Matches Fashion recently launched an online children’s boutique and they currently have an incredible selection of Petite Maloles in baby and in toddler sizes.  What newborn baby girl doesn’t need a pair of these Petite Anna Leather Ankle Boots for GBP 86 (including VAT), available in both black here and brown here?  They come as small as infant size 16, which means she can even leave the hospital in them.  And before you conclude that I am a complete crazy person for suggesting that you spend that much money on baby shoes, please notice that most of the sizes are already sold out!  So someone at least as crazy as me is buying them.

snakeprintshoesIf you already have a toddler who loves shoes, make sure to look at these Petite Orphelie Criss Cross Violet Snake Print Pumps.  Priced at GBP 110 here, these would certainly make her holiday outfit.  bianca shoesOr perhaps these Petite Bianca PomPom Snake Print Ballerina Pumps, which retail at a shocking GBP 119 here.

Or if your little girl is more of a minimalist, the Petite Celia Ballet Bow Pumps are still available in black in a few sizes here for GBP 91.  Again, there are obviously lots of nutty shoppers out there.  But don’t forget, the shoes make the outfit, even if you are only two.

If you have any money at all left over after outfitting your little girl in Maloles, Matches does have a small selection of Maloles for women available here.  celia shoesThey unfortunately don’t have anything left in basic black or brown, but if your two year old is going to be wearing purple snakeskin, then you can surely pull off these red pony hair ballet flats at left, even if you are extraordinarily pregnant.  redponyskinAt only GBP 218, they seem a bargain compared to the PomPom Snake Print Pumps above–and, unlike your little princess, you won’t grow out of them in a few weeks.

For those who have not heard about this already, I do want to let everyone know that Disney is offering refunds to those of us who purchased Baby Einstein videos between 2004 and 2009.  It seems that Disney has been accused of unfair and deceptive business practices by claiming to all of us parents that Baby Einstein videos actually make infants smarter.  And by offering the refund, Disney has tacitly acknowledged that…well, they don’t.  I am going to take my four videos and mail them in for my $63.96, but I would just like to let Disney know that there are some of us who did not buy Baby Einstein videos with the naive expectation that our children would watch the videos and then be destined for Harvard.  I bought them because my babies liked them and were willing to sit in front of them for a good 15 minutes, which meant I was therefore able to take a shower and maybe even put on some deodorant and brush my hair before having to entertain the baby again.  In rethinking their marketing techniques, Disney should consider honesty and advertise them as such–something like “will assist you in maintaining some semblance of personal hygiene while caring for your offspring.”  I speak from experience when I say that alone is a damned good reason to buy a DVD.  Click here for details on how to apply for the refund.

I think the last time I wrote about elasticized flats, several people sent me emails requesting that I take a break from singing the praises of shoes with elastic. Apparently, I was going overboard in terms of recommending them for a pregnant woman’s swollen feet.

Well I took a break, but today Net-a-Porter launched its Summer Clearance sale, and there is a great selection of high-end designer elasticized flats available in a decent range of sizes. I’d hate to have you miss out, especially if you are newly pregnant, new to this blog, and just beginning to wonder whether your flats are going to last you through the fall (they’re not). There is also a good selection of flat sandals if you live in a warmer climate and can get away with sandals for another few months. I personally tried to show as little of my feet as possible when I was pregnant, but perhaps you have beautiful pregnant feet–lucky you.

These great, very comfy-looking metallic Roberto Cavallis are reduced more than 50% here from USD $593 to approximately USD $284 (you must type in “SUMMER” at checkout for the additional 20% off).

And these Marni patent flats are available here in three basic, practical colors for USD $254, reduced from USD $474.

If you aren’t feeling so practical and want to brighten up that basic black maternity dress you somehow find yourself wearing every other day, Fendi’s folding banana flats are available here in fuschia for USD $176, reduced from USD $315.

I may very well be repeating myself, but it is important to remember that when you are pregnant, elastic ranks high among your best fashion weapons. Don’t presume you only need it in your trousers and your bras–your feet need it too!

I know, I know, I am slightly obsessed with elasticized flats and you have definitely gotten the message that you need to have a pair for when your feet expand to the point of being unrecognizable .  I promise, this is the last time I will write about them.  They are just so comfortable, I want all of you to share in my podiatric bliss while you are pregnant and then after you’ve delivered (when your feet are suddenly permanently wide, flat, and a completely different size).

Net-a-Porter.com has launched its summer sale and while shopping on this site is not for the faint of heart, some of their elasticized ballet flats are as much as 50% off, including these Pedro Garcia satin flats, which are usually USD $325 and are now only USD $162.50 here and are also available in yellow. They are also available in this nutmeg color above, but for USD $228.

These cute patent Marni elasticized ballet flats are also as much as 50% off, reduced from USD $492 to $318 here in this great beige color and down to USD $246 here in this merlot color. They also come in navy patent.

Click here to see the entire selection of flats on sale on Net-a-Porter.com.  There is a good selection and a wide range of prices. Your feet will be swollen this summer, but comfort can still be yours.

I’ve blogged about this before, but if you’re pregnant, I truly believe you cannot own too many pairs of shoes designed with elastic.  Elastic is likely already your ballooning body’s best friend.  Trust me, your feet will soon feel the same way.  And though you may be planning on wearing flip flops until the very end, there will be days at the end of the third trimester when your feet simply should not be visible to the public.  On those days, you’ll wish you owned a pair of flats with elastic.

I’ve recommended the Maloles ballet flat here and the French Sole ballet flat here.  pedro-garcia.jpgNow, I strongly suggest you make your way over to the Neiman Marcus First Call sale and pick up a pair of Pedro Garcia’s Satin Ballerina Flat with elasticized sides here, reduced from USD $325 to USD $228.  They are available in purple, lime and blue.  I know, the colors are a bit…festive.  But they will certainly brighten up your basic black maternity dress or your basic black maternity trousers.  And these are some very comfortable flats.  pedro-garcia-_2.jpgI bought them in red during my last pregnancy and I still wear them all the time.  In fact, I wear them too often.  But a good number of people in Jerusalem wear the exact same outfit every single day, so it’s not as if anyone actually cares how often I wear my red satin elastic shoes.
pedro-garcia-_3.jpgIf the colors are too much for you, the Pedro Garcia Satin Ballerina flats are also on sale here at Saks, reduced from USD $325 to USD $195 in grey, brown and black.  But the sizes are very limited.  If you’re pregnant and still lucky enough to be a size 5.5, then you are in luck.

I have vowed not to use this as a forum for complaining about Jerusalem, but I have a brief, valuable word of advice for all of my readers who might, at some juncture in their lives, find themselves visiting this city.  Do NOT get waxed here.  Back in the fall, I had firmly resolved not to trust another Israeli with hot wax, but the passage of time and the delivery of the twins obviously clouded my memory and I tried again this morning.  Bad idea.  I’ll spare you the gruesome details.  Let’s just say that Israeli beauticians seem to find pleasure in inflicting as much pain as physically possible during the waxing process.  I think I even saw the woman waxing me smile this morning after I screamed.  Perhaps they consider it a means of truly experiencing the pain and suffering endured by their ancestors.  I, however, consider it justification for buying myself a razor immediately. After trauma like what I endured this morning, I did what I always do when I want to feel better and hopped on the Internet to do some therapeutic shopping.  And guess what?  Saks is having a fabulous shoe promotion now through Sunday, March 30.  If you spend a total of $400 on shoes, you get a $150 gift card.  It’s as if the marketing team at Saks almost knew what the Israeli waxer did to me this morning and designed a promotional campaign just for me.french-sole.jpgI am using this serendipitous retail occurrence to replace my French Sole Ballet Flats, which I wore almost every day during my pregnancy, especially at the end.  French Sole’s flats are legendary for their comfort, but these particular leather flats are also adjustable.  What more could a pregnant woman ask for than adjustable shoes? french-sole-_3.jpg These shoes will be your best friend in those last few weeks of pregnancy, as your feet start to look just like Fred Flintstone’s (not that you’ll be able to see them anyway).  They aren’t the sturdiest of shoes–mine are virtually unrecognizable after six months.  But they are stylish and thanks to the drawstring in the back, will carry you from the first trimester to the bitter end.french-sole-_2.jpgSaks has them available here in both black and bone for USD $215 and if you spring for both colors, you’ll soon have a $150 gift card in your mailbox. Just type in the promotion code SHOES at checkout.  You can save that gift card to use after you can see your feet again.

I have been there…you’re in your second or third trimester, you’ve gained a whole lot of weight, and your feet are so swollen that by the end of a long day, it looks like you are baking bread in your shoes (I stole that line from Chris Rock, but isn’t it a very accurate description of what pregnant feet look like after being jammed into shoes all day?).  You can’t wait to get home and throw on a pair of flip-flops or, god forbid, those awful-looking Crocs that a lot of adults somehow seem to think should be worn in public as shoes.

maloles-_2.jpg You clearly haven’t tried Maloles ballet flats.  Designed by a Spanish designer who works out of Paris and made of super-soft leather with elastic at the top of the shoe, they are an absolute godsend for pregnant women.  No bows, no rhinestones, no embellishment whatsoever–just very well-made shoes that look great on and go with absolutely everything, from suits to jeans to leggings.

maloles.jpg They are a bit hard to find.  Out of the U.S., Shopbop.com has the black leather Maloles ballet flat in stock here for US $252, but only sizes 39.5 and 40 are left.  Shopbop also sells the Maloles flat in both black and brown velvet here for US $260 and have a full range of sizes available.

Matches Fashion out of the UK has the black leather flat available online here in a wider range of sizes and also offers the Maloles flat in blue and bronze here for GBP 135.  If you live in London, they also sell them out of their stores.  I just bought a size 39 in black from Matches while I was visiting a friend and they are just as reliable as they were during the last pregnancy.  They run very true to size.
