ON SALE

I had something already written for today, but I woke up to discover that Kate Spade is holding a rather amazing Surprise Sale, offering 75% off a very nice collection of items for today only. This is particularly relevant to all of us, as a nice selection of the Kate Spade diaper bags are included in the sale. The Jubilee Stripe Stevie Baby Bag is among the sale items, reduced from its usual USD $398 to only USD $179. In addition to diaper bags, jewelry, clothing, shoes, and accessories are also included. This is a great sale, head over there and buy up before supplies are gone.

All sales are final, but if you are able to buy a Kate Spade diaper bag for $179, you should be immune to buyer’s remorse anyway.

And don’t forget, the Isabella Oliver Spree sale continues, with a 39% discount on all maternitywear and nursingwear today using promotional code “SPREE39″.

4 DAYS ONLY – SAVE 35% to 47% OFF on all Maternity Clothing at the Isabella Oliver Spree Sale. (Offer valid From May 14 to May 17, 2012 only) Be sure to check daily for the new promo code & qualifying details!

The shirtdress is everywhere this spring and I, for one, am thrilled about it. Michael Kors and Diane von Furstenberg probably didn’t consider this when designing their S/S12 collections, but the shirtdress is an ideal postpartum clothing piece. It is roomy, it provides the opportunity to create a waist even if yours has not yet returned, it has buttons for easy nursing access, and it shrinks with you as you start to lose your weight (I write that hopefully).

Maternity designers are latching on to the trend as well, and I was pleasantly surprised to discover that the most appealing maternity shirtdress out there right now is from Olian Maternity. I really like Olian Maternity. The line is very good quality and they manage to incorporate fashion trends while also keeping their price points reasonably low.  But I do think the line’s curious affinity for wild prints goes a bit overboard. Pregnant women just don’t want to wear those loud prints all the time. There comes a point in a woman’s pregnancy where subtlety is rightly preferred.

Olian Maternity’s Khaki Linen Shirtdress is a welcome, chic diversion from all of those wild printed dresses. Olian has rightly dispensed with the buttons that typically run up a shirtdress (buttons are never a pregnant woman’s fashion ally), but has managed to preserve the look of the shirtdress and has done so in tasteful, neutral linen. This dress works for the office just as well as it works for a summer day at the park and is priced at a very appealing USD $136.

By the way, there is a whopper of a sale being staged right now on Polarn o Pyret’s USA website. The Swedish designer, best known for its boldly striped children’s clothing collection, is discontinuing its “Mama” maternity and nursing collection and all of the pieces are 70% off beginning today. PF has been a longtime fan of this line for its simple, high-quality maternity basics and particularly for its cold-weather maternity gear. The Swedes know how to keep warm and POP’s Maternity Windfleece Jacket is the only fleece I’ve ever encountered that is specifically tailored for maternity. Sizes are very limited, but make sure you take a look and see if you can get lucky.

Michaelstars.com is offering 25% off sitewide starting today with promotional code “FRIEND” and as you probably already know, the designer has a covetable line of high-end maternity basics, ranging from basic tanks to maxi dresses.  Michael Stars Maternity Slub 1x1 Long Sleeve TeeAmong my long-time personal favorites? The Michael Stars Maternity Slub 1×1 Long Sleeve Tee and the Rib Boyfriend Tank, both of which come in an assortment of neutral colors and make great layering pieces.

The Spring 2012 line includes an array of classic Michael Stars “Maternitees” in a new palette of bright colors like lemon and orange peel, as well as some new pieces like the Stripe Relaxed V-Neck, available in lemon, coral, and green. The designer has also released a Maternity Double Vee Maxi Dress for spring in four basic, neutral colors. All pieces are made from Michael Stars’ trademark luxury cotton. The prices are on the high end for tees and tanks, but 25% off lessens the impact on your wallet, and layering pieces are perhaps your best investment during a pregnancy, as you will be wearing them every day and want them to last. And you don’t need me to tell you there is a vast difference in quality between the Michael Stars Rib Maternity Tank and the maternity tank you can buy for $8 at Old Navy.

The Friends & Family Sale lasts four days, through Monday.

J Brand 3412 Maternity Skinny JeansI like nothing better than a spring Friends & Family sale, especially when those sales are occuring at online boutiques with a very current selection of maternity denim. Such is the case at Piperlime and shopbop.com, both of which are offering 20% off sitewide today. The promotional code at Piperlime is “TWENTY” and is good through midnight Pacific Time tonight (Tuesday night). The promo code at Shopbop is “INTHEFAMILY20″ and is good all day today and tomorrow.

If you’ve been holding back, today is finally the day to spring for the designer maternity jeans you’ve been eyeing. Those incredibly flattering  J Brand 3412 Maternity Skinny Jeans? They are normally priced at $217 at Piperlime. I know, ouch. With the F&F discount, they will cost you only $176, a bargain relatively speaking. And those new J Brand Tencel Legging Maternity Jeans? Normally priced at USD $227 at shopbop.com, they are almost a steal for USD $181.

There are a few designer exclusions from both sales, but I am sure you will still be able to find something you might like.

I somehow failed to include this sale in yesterday’s posting, but wanted to make sure to alert all of you to Hanna Andersson’s Baby Sale, which is going on this weekend and ends tomorrow (Sunday). If you buy one baby item from the Hanna Andersson Baby Collection, you receive a second item of equal or lesser value at 50% off. The discount is automatically taken at checkout. It’s a good opportunity to stock up on my absolutely favorite onesies for baby, the Hanna Andersson Jeepers Creepers Organic Onesies. I’ve written about these onesies here before and now that I am using them again, I am reminded how truly superior they are.

By the way, I can’t help but share this recent photo of Robert Downey, Jr. with all of you. Downey Jr.’s wife gave birth a few days before I did, so he is clearly in newborn baby mode, performing the obligatory morning Starbucks run. But check out his ensemble. My husband has been home with me for two weeks, and is definitely in newborn baby mode–unshaven, jeans every day, absolutely exhausted. But under no circumstances does he look this frightening. And he is not a movie star. Who let Robert leave the house dressed like this? What is up with the shoes?

If you have not yet taken PF’s advice and done a bit of maternity shopping down under, today may be the day to start. Egg Maternity, New Zealand’s premier high-end maternity line, is holding a 24-hour, 50% off sale today in its online boutique and the sale includes just about every item on the site, believe it or not. Almost all of Egg’s new arrivals are included, as well as most pieces from the most recent Spring/Summer Collection.

The sale began at 4pm EST yesterday, so I’m not going to waste time telling you what I like, being that you only have until 4pm today to shop it. Although, how gorgeous is this green Pleated Wizard Dress, slashed from USD $210 to USD $105? Or how about this red Pleated Maxi Skirt, now only $84.95, down from USD $169.90? And yes, these prices are for real. Shipping to the United States is only about USD $17, so don’t let that deter you from an international shopping adventure. And if you order $300 worth of merchandise, shipping is free.

One warning–my experience with Egg is that it runs slightly small for us Americans, so size up if you are unsure of sizing.

I’ve been watching the maternity section on zappos.com slowly shrink and shrink and while it seems clear that zappos.com is unfortunately doing away with its wide selection of maternity clothing, I did wonder where all of those items were going. It’s not as if the online retailer held some kind of blowout maternity sale.

Well, actually they are holding a blowout maternity sale–only it’s being held over on 6pm.com, zappos.com’s’ very own affiliated outlet site. 6pm.com is currently carrying all of the discontinued and overstocked styles from zappos.com (including kids clothing and shoes, by the way). The site also has more than 150 maternity pieces from designers like Belabumbum, Maternal America, Olian, and Paige Premium, to name just a few, and all of the pieces are discounted from 40% up to 70%. These are not current season pieces and sizes are limited, but as always with maternitywear, wearing of-the-season pieces is not necessarily a priority and you may get lucky and find your size in stock (or the size you are eventually going to need during the third trimester). Here are some examples of designer maternity finds you can pick up for very little money

1.  The khaki Maternal America skinny cargo pants are on sale for a mere USD $34.99, reduced from USD $116.

(Maternal America – Maternity Skinny Cargo Pants (Moss) – Apparel)

2.  Paige Premium Denim’s Cropped Twill Trousers are a full 70% off at USD $64.99, down from USD $179…and still available in all sizes.

(Paige Premium Denim – Maternity Twill Chandler Venice w/ Higher Panel (Wildlife Grey) – Apparel)

3.  There are basic, but very useful, Belabumbum nursing bras selling for under USD $20.

Belabumbum – Camille Lace Cross Nursing Bra (Nude) – Apparel
4. Maternal America’s basic bright red tank dress is only $39.99, reduced from USD $131. Suddenly, this designer dress becomes the perfect knock-around beach cover-up.

Part of the difficulty with nursingwear is that it just about always looks like nursingwear. There are a few small nursing designers out there who have recently set out to design real fashion pieces that also happen to be nursing accessible, like Heather Lehmann and Peaks of London. But the pieces are expensive and I completely understand the reluctance to invest heavily in clothing you are undoubtedly going to stain and in all likelihood, ruin within months. Nursingwear, as I’ve learned from experience, never really qualifies as investment clothing…
…which is why I am a big fan of shopping Boob Nursingwear…on sale. Boob is a Swedish-based design company that specializes in minimalist, quality nursingwear. Somehow the Swedes always manage to turn out high-quality baby and nursing products that look great and come at relatively reasonable prices (IKEA or Polarn o Pyret, anyone?). Boob is a perfect example of that. Boob nursingwear has set the standard in the industry with well-designed nursing pieces that offer easy, convenient nursing accessibility. More importantly, a good portion of their collection doesn’t really look like nursingwear. For example, I just ordered Boob’s Striped Knit Nursing Dress. This dress offers the same nursing access as Boob’s well-known nursing tops, but it is actually a really cute and fun cotton dress. I don’t know how soon I’ll be ready to wear it alone with tights, but during those first few postpartum weeks, I look forward to donning it with leggings or jeans and walking out the door without worrying how I am going to get nursing access quickly and discreetly that day.

I do, however, wait until Boob goes on sale to purchase their items. I have a serious shopping problem, but I’m not nuts. I am not going to spend $135 on a nursing dress so I can constantly leak breast milk all over it, no matter how cute it is. This dress, however, is now 40% off at the Bellydance Maternity sale, and is still available in just about all sizes for USD $81.
Other online maternity and nursing boutiques are also carrying a good selection of Boob Nursingwear on sale right now, including some of the line’s most fashion-forward nursing pieces. Figure 8 Maternity has a wide selection of Boob nursingwear, including the cozy Knitted Nursing Hoodie, included in its winter sale for 30% off. Boob’s online boutique is offering many pieces at 50% off and Pretty Pregnant has a limited selection of Boob nursingwear available at 20% off (both boutiques ship from Europe, so you’ll have to pay international shipping). Sizes are sporadically available in all three boutiques, so be sure to check all three places before giving up on your perfect item.
