Children’s Clothing

I somehow failed to include this sale in yesterday’s posting, but wanted to make sure to alert all of you to Hanna Andersson’s Baby Sale, which is going on this weekend and ends tomorrow (Sunday). If you buy one baby item from the Hanna Andersson Baby Collection, you receive a second item of equal or lesser value at 50% off. The discount is automatically taken at checkout. It’s a good opportunity to stock up on my absolutely favorite onesies for baby, the Hanna Andersson Jeepers Creepers Organic Onesies. I’ve written about these onesies here before and now that I am using them again, I am reminded how truly superior they are.

By the way, I can’t help but share this recent photo of Robert Downey, Jr. with all of you. Downey Jr.’s wife gave birth a few days before I did, so he is clearly in newborn baby mode, performing the obligatory morning Starbucks run. But check out his ensemble. My husband has been home with me for two weeks, and is definitely in newborn baby mode–unshaven, jeans every day, absolutely exhausted. But under no circumstances does he look this frightening. And he is not a movie star. Who let Robert leave the house dressed like this? What is up with the shoes?

Splendid has just released a new selection of baby separates in its online boutique and I speak from extensive experience when i tell you to buy today, because Splendid’s newborn and infant sizes go very fast. The new selection includes both the Splendid’s Infant Boys’ Collection iconand Splendid Infant Girls’ Collection. Splendid’s must-have and very-hard-to-find infant pieces are their basic onesies and bodysuits. Once you’ve purchased one of these inexplicably soft pieces and dressed your baby in it a few times, you’ll know why they are virtually impossible to find in newborn sizes.

I’ve been so busy doing third-trimester shopping for myself, I’ve almost forgotten about dressing this baby. She already has a few crucial pieces hanging in her closet, but when she gets home, she’s not going to be able to sleep in her new Burberry poncho. Here are just a few to-die-for children’s sales going on today.

1. Designer children’s boutique Alex and Alexa launched its Winter Sale icontoday and though you yourself can’t squeeze one arm into a Juicy Couture Puffer Coat, there is no reason your toddler shouldn’t have the opportunity to do so. Alex and Alexa is offering 30% off a selection of their swoon-worthy children’s designer clothing. If you had your heart set on Chloe, Fendi, or Burberry, those designers are not included in this sale (you’ll have to wait until after Christmas for those baby Fendi flats to go on sale). But Lacoste, Juicy, Timberland, Tommy Hilfiger, Caramel Baby, and others are all included and there is guaranteed to be something you and/or your baby wants/needs in this sale.

2. Swedish children’s designer Polarn o Pyret is offering 25% off sitewide today with promotional code “GIFTPOP.” It’s only December 15th and my kids’ hat and glove basket is already empty, due to the contents having been left in various playgrounds, restaurants, and cars over recent weeks. Replenish at the P.O.P. sale, this designer really is the gold standard when it comes to children’s outerwear.

3. And over at the Stella McCartney boutique, the entire Children’s Autumn/Winter Collection is 50% off for today only. This private sale ends at midnight London time, so you need to shop it before 7pm EST tonight. The prices for McCartney’s children’s collection are typically very hard to swallow–at 50% off, those prices seem almost irresistible. A $103 boys’ cashmere hoodie seems almost reasonable at the sale price of $51.50, doesn’t it?

The Perfect Onesie

October 26, 2011

In the coming months, you are going to acquire a healthy supply of onesies in which to outfit your new arrival. Your baby shower, the holidays, baby gifts from family friends and work acquaintances–all of these events will yield onesies. They will have cute pictures and witty sayings printed on them and you will be oh-so-thrilled to fold them neatly into the drawer of your new changing table as you prepare for the impending arrival of your bundle of joy.

And then, a few weeks into parenthood, you will still be grateful for your family and friends’ generosity, but you will be wishing that someone had bought you a sturdy onesie that might actually be able to withstand pooh, pee, breast milk, spit-up, numerous heavy duty washings, and the more-than-occasional bleaching. Outfitting your little guy in a onesie that reads “My mom’s a fox” is fun and all, but when the flimsy onesie is covered in an enormous poop stain and just doesn’t have the ability to withstand one more washing in the heavy duty cycle, you’ll find yourself replacing onesies as quickly as you do your breast pads.

Or, you can arm yourself in advance and purchase a stockpile of Hanna Andersson’s Jeepers Creepers In Organic Cotton. These cotton onesies are the energizer bunnies of the onesie industry. They’re sturdy, they’re thick, and they last forever. I still have a few of these that I purchased for my very first child and after four kids, hundreds of washings and many, many hours being soaked in Clorox, I am shocked to tell you that they are clean and ready to outfit Baby #5 come February. The snaps still work and the elastic around the legs and wrists has not stretched out substantially.

Hanna Andersson’s Jeepers Creepers Collection is currently on sale at 20% off, with the long-sleeved onesies reduced from USD $16 to $12.80. The onesies come in newborn sizes up to size 3T and are available in pink and blue as well as prints. I have to be honest though, I have learned not to be ambitious and for the first few months, to stick with solid white. Your son or daughter is usually wearing a onesie underneath something else anyway, you might as well make your life easier and buy the Clorox-ready onesies. You’ll know what I mean once you see that first breast-milk-induced diaper explosion.

Just in case you have not been keeping up with stylist Rachel Zoe lately, she is already as uber-skinny as she was before her pregnancy and her 3-month-old son is wearing oversized sunglasses just like hers when he ventures out in LA. This picture of baby boy Skylar is just ridiculous. I’m all for making sure my sons have a feminine side and I really do hope they grow up to appreciate fashion, but you will not catch one of my boys in a pair of shades like that.

Missoni Bugaboo Cameleon Accessory Set

What is almost as ridiculous is her new Missoni Bugaboo. But I still love it. And you don’t have to be Rachel Zoe to push one. Neiman Marcus is now selling the new Missoni Bugaboo Accessory sets exclusively. The Missoni collection includes both an accessory set for the Bugaboo Cameleon and an accessory set for the Bugaboo Bee.

The Cameleon set includes the sun canopy, the bassinet apron, and the cotton Missoni baby blanket that Rachel has been photographed toting all over LA. The price tag for the set itself is $269, but remember, you still have to buy the actual Bugaboo stroller base, which retails for $880. That’s $1149 for a stroller–and that’s before you even start shopping for Bugaboo’s other stroller accessories (cup holder, sun shade, foot muff, toddler riding board, etc.). Trust me, I’ve been there and done all of that a few times over–it adds up.

Missoni Bugaboo Bee Accessory Set

The Bee set offers a different print and includes only the sun canopy and the same cotton blanket. The Missoni Bee set retails for only $199, but again, you have to buy the stroller itself. The Bugaboo Bee retails for $600. And again, you’re looking at additional investments in a host of irresistible stroller accessories.

The sets are now available for pre-order at Neiman Marcus. Neiman’s is currently offering free shipping on all orders with promo code “NMSHIP,” so at least you’ll save some money there.

Rachel Zoe Fall 2011 Cape

Speaking of Rachel Zoe and speaking of Neiman’s, the stylist’s new self-titled fashion line is also available exclusively for pre-order at the department store and I am reluctant to admit it, but I love the clothing line as well (I am not thrilled about the shoes and the bags). The clothes are also not insanely priced (think Tory Burch-esque pricing), which is vaguely refreshing considering what Rachel is usually touting. Yesterday, Rachel’s daily fashion emails suggested we all celebrate the Fourth of July by indulging in one of Balmain’s “Stars and Stripes” white lambskin jackets, adorned in studs, spikes, crystals, zippers, and safety pins. The price tag? A mere $21,555.

The signature piece in Rahel’s new line, the camel leather-trimmed cape, is already sold out.  Sadly, the cape is just about the only piece in the collection that seems maternity-friendly. The rest of the line seems more appropriate for donning on those days when you’ve given birth and you’re back to a good old size zero.

A few great children’s clothing sales launched today–I’ll be back later today with a promised hot-weather maternity recommendation for you, but in the meantime, take advantage of these discounts to stock up on warm weather essentials (and non-essentials) for your bundle of joy.

Stella McCartney Polly Flower Print Raincoat

1. Stella McCartney Kids Private Sale. The designer’s entire kids’ Spring/Summer 2011 collection is 50% off for today only and all sizes are still available. Need I say more?

2. Hatley Kids’ Pajama Sale. If you don’t know about Hatley yet, it is only a matter of time. These pajamas are the gold standard for children’s pajamas and not only are they incredibly cute, but they last forever. They don’t fade, the elastics don’t stretch out, and shrinkage is minimal. I do recommend you buy up one size, I find they do tend to run slightly small. Kids’ Sleepwear Sale at Hatley: 25% off selected items, no promo code required. Offer valid 6.21.11–6.23.11.

3. Neiman Marcus Children’s Sale. Neiman’s is offering up to 55% off in its online children’s boutique. I am actually quite impressed by the size of the discount offered on designer brands like Burberry, Flowers by Zoe, Little Marc Jacobs, and Milly Minis, so it’s worth a look.

4. Crewcuts. J. Crew is now offering an additional 30% off its online summer sale with promo code “MUSTHAVE.” The children’s sizes are very limited, but the prices are incredible.

5. Gilt. Gilt is holding a “4th of July”-themed kids’ clothing sale today. I already checked it out with my somewhat suspiciously-acquired Gilt Noir membership. Some very cute bathing suits and girls’ sundresses are included.

I’m a bit late to this sale, but UK-based children’s boutique Alex and Alexa is currently offering 25% off sitewide with promo code “SUMMER.” I usually just browse this luxury children’s clothing site because although I like to think nothing is too good for my little boys, no one’s toddler needs a pair of $250 Fendi sneakers or Fendi gladiator sandals. With this impressive discount though, they’ll only cost about USD $190, and that may be cause for you to reconsider. The promotion is good through this evening, so you have to shop today. The site is also offering half price international shipping, which is a nice touch. Burberry clothing is the only designer exclusion, everything else is fair game, including children’s Dior, Marc Jacobs, Gaultier, and Dolce & Gabbana. On the more practical side, you can score new Hunter Wellies for your little one with the discount.

Buying one of fashion designer Danielle Issa Helayel’s dresses these days is a tough task. The Brazilian-born founder of fashion line Issa London has been in very high demand since Kate Middleton donned one of her trademark silk wrap jersey dresses in sapphire blue for the royal engagement announcement back in November. Issa’s jersey wrap dresses now sell out almost immediately after they go on sale and the designer has wisely taken advantage of demand and is relaunching the Issa brand in the US, releasing a line of designer flip-flops in collaboration with Havaiana, and opening her first stand-alone boutiques throughout Brazil.

If you can’t manage to get your hands on an Issa dress for yourself, or if you can’t manage to fit into one because you’re toting an extra 60 pounds right now, you can now console yourself by purchasing an Issa dress for your baby. Baby Issa has just released its debut Spring 2011 collection and the vibrant printed sundresses are being sold in high-end European children’s boutiques Joseph M and Alex & Alexa. Of course, now that she’s a fashion darling, Helayel can charge upwards of USD $100 for a toddler sundress or an infant bikini. And people will obviously happily pay it, because this collection is selling out fast. Right now, only girls’ pieces are available, but the collection will include boys’ clothing as well. Get one while you still can–you may not feel like a princess right now, but that’s no reason to deny your daughter the opportunity to dress like one.

It’s that time of year again–the Saks Friends & Family Sale doesn’t officially start until Thursday, but the 20% discount is available online today with code “FRIEND2.” Unfortunately, the list of designer exclusions is even longer than it was last year. I quickly discovered this morning that just about every item I had been eyeing in recent weeks is excluded from the sale. But maybe you’ll get lucky and the items you’ve been eyeing will qualify. Saks’ maternity section now carries maternity denim almost exclusively, but the promotion does apply to all lines featured, including J Brand and Paige Premium. These J Brand Skinny 7/8-length White Jeans are less than $150 with the promotion.

The discount also does seem to apply to almost all of the children’s clothing lines, so you will definitely be able to use the promotion if you stick to the Saks’ Children’s Section.
