For the New Arrival

My friend Nassrin always tells me that I do a poor job of keeping her informed of good children’s clothing sales. Obviously my primary mission with this blog is to outfit all of you pregnant woman. But inevitably you’ll be buying children’s clothing soon. Being that I do spend a substantial amount of time searching the web looking for bargains on high-end children’s clothing, I thought I’d share today. There are a good number of very serious sales going on this week, so here you go, Nas:

1. Crewcuts. J Crew’s super-cute children’s clothing collection widened its sale selection today and while the sizes are limited, shop today and you could score yourself a bargain. They are offering 30% off the already-reduced sale prices when you use code “EXTRA30.” Shop now here, this stuff goes quickly. I have already had some other enterprising shoppers steal items out of my shopping cart before I could even enter my credit card. I really love Crewcuts shoes, by the way. Very durable and they look like real shoes, not like kids’ shoes.

2. Ralph Lauren. Always my go-to designer for the boys’ back-to-school clothing, Polo is offering an additional 25% off their summer sale prices this week here. Again, children’s sizes are limited, but their clothing is timeless and there are many bargains to be had, especially on trusty basics like T-shirts and cargo shorts. Buy ahead for next summer, that is what I have been doing.

3. Tuttibella. This high-end children’s clothing boutique has been staging a “Progressive Sale” here for the past few weeks and prices are now up to 75% off.  Sizes here are extremely limited, but there is still a good selection of infant wear available. Some of the clothing is ridiculously expensive, but at 75% off, ridiculous can suddenly become reasonable. James went to camp this morning in his new Moschino black Bermuda shorts, pictured at right. Originally priced at $149.95, they are now only $36.99. I don’t know who is buying toddler boys’ shorts for $149.95, but I must say, these are very, very nice shorts.

4. Vineyard Vines. The children’s clothing made by Vineyard Vines is certainly pricey, but I can tell you from experience that their clothing lasts. These pique polo shirts I bought two years ago for James lasted through both twins and Leighton is now wearing them. They still look great–and that’s after numerous treatments with various stain-removal agents. Vineyard Vines is currently offering 25% off its sale items with promotional code “VVSUMMER25″ here and although the initial sale prices themselves aren’t so impressive in terms of discounts, the additional 25% off does make it seem like you are actually getting a good deal.

5. Mini Social. If you are about to have a baby, then click over here to join Mini Social today and shop the Splendid Littles sample sale. Most of the availablility is in the infant sizes, but there are some items available in larger toddler sizes. Splendid Littles runs extremely small and does shrink a little bit, so I always buy two sizes up for the boys. If you are a soon-to-be new mom and haven’t discovered Splendid Littles yet, you are in for a treat. It’s been years since I discovered this incredibly soft cotton children’s line, and I still can’t seem to get enough of it.

Happy shopping!

I am about to tell you about one of those ridiculously priced children’s clothing boutiques that you often come across and think to yourself, “Who buys this stuff?” and “What do they do when their toddler eats spaghetti bolognese while wearing it?” That is what I think whenever I see Suri Cruise in another designer ensemble–spaghetti sauce is impossible to get out, how does Katie do it? Or does she just throw out Suri’s clothing once it is stained?

But browsing through Alex and Alexa, the online UK-based designer children’s boutique, is one of my favorite ultra-decadent shopping activities. I rarely ever buy anything, but I love to marvel at some of the items they sell for little boys, as well as the absolutely insane prices attached.  And someone out there besides Suri and Vivienne and Knox are buying this stuff, because it sells out fast. I do occasionally indulge in shorts and pants for the boys from the Dutch brand Scotch & Soda, and I can barely order the stuff before it is all gone. I had no idea there were so many people out there looking to spend $80 on this pair of size 4T cargo shorts. (Scotch & Soda makes amazing clothing for little boys, I cannot get enough of their cargo shorts and their trousers. Don’t let yourself get hooked, it has become a sad, dangerous addiction).

Anyway, Alex and Alexa is offering 15% off sitewide for this weekend only when you use code “VIPSPRINGX” at checkout. If you haven’t checked out the website before, definitely do so for your own entertainment. But maybe that extra 15% off will give you the incentive you need to buy your two-year-old boy this pair of red denim skinny jeans from Parisian children’s designer Finger in the Nose for GBP 80 (only GBP 68 with the discount). Or how about this blue Marc Jacobs military jacket for your two-year-old girl? With the discount, it is reduced from GBP 88 to only GBP 74.80.

Today is the last day for the discount so hurry up. I have been closely monitoring this black leather biker jacket by Finger in the Nose (GBP 282.50, but only GBP 240 with the discount) and over the weekend, it has almost completely sold out in toddler sizes.

Does the quest for the ideal diaper bag ever end? After my nearly four years of diaper bag shopping, I would think so. But as much as I am now content to carry my super-durable Double Duo SkipHop because it is the most practical way to carry diapers and accompanying paraphernalia for four toddlers, I do still long for something just as big but a bit more…well, attractive. During my recent tour of maternity showrooms and boutiques here in New York City, however, I came across OiOi diaper bags and fell in love with OiOi’s brand new Tote Sack Diaper Bag, which was recently released for Winter 2010.

I spotted this bag from across one of the showrooms and was immediately drawn to its size. At 15″ high and 13″ wide, this is a sizeable bag. As it turns out, it also appears to be just as durable as the trusty SkipHop. It is made from canvas, but is then completely laminated to ensure resistance to spit-up, dirty diapers, spilled apple juice, etc. It has the typical amenities–wipe case, changing pad, bottle holder. But I particularly like the shape of this bag because it is not only large, but it is deep. There are certain items that must be carried in a diaper bag that a mom hopefully doesn’t need to access that often, such as extra clothing, emergency toys, or a change of underpants for the reluctant toilet trainer (I carry several of these). It is nice to be able to store those in the bottom of your diaper bag, without having to rummage through them every time you need a bottle or a diaper. I was also pleasantly surprised at the price of the new Tote Sack Diaper Bag, which retails for only USD $139.99. After that unexpected news, I immediately purchased one here at DiaperBags.com and very much look forward to carrying it this spring. It may not completely replace the SkipHop, but it will be nice to have something a bit more fun to carry once in a while. As of now, this bag only comes in the chocolate-brown butterfly pattern pictured at left.

And, by the way, if you aren’t in the market for a gargantuan-sized diaper bag, make sure to check out OiOi’s line of messenger-style and hobo-style diaper bags on their website here. I hadn’t been very familiar with the line until last week, but I was impressed by some of their selections. They are an Australian-based company and try very hard to make sure their diaper bags look nothing like diaper bags. I was also pleasantly surprised by their prices.

kissykissyI know I just posted about a sale at Bellydance Maternity but they suddenly announced today that they are offering 40% off their entire collection of baby clothing for today and tomorrow here. The sale includes both sale items and regular-priced items–which means that their Kissy Kissy collection is available at a 40% discount. I am an enormous fan of Kissy Kissy’s infant clothing and if you don’t own one of their pieces, head to this sale now and buy one of the cotton rompers with feet. You may not know this yet, but you will have “go-to” outfits for your new baby just like you have for yourself and the Kissy Kissy romper will be one of them. Leighton is about to grow out of the 18-24 month Kissy Kissy rompers (the largest size) and I am going to be very sad that I won’t be buying any more of their clothing. The quality is great, the patterns are adorable and subtle, they wash well, and they last forever. My only very, very minor complaint about their baby clothing is that the snaps do wear out more quickly than other brands and need to be replaced. But I have snapped four babies into these pajamas and the cotton still looks virtually new, so I really shouldn’t be complaining about weak snaps.

Kissy Kissy is typically not easy to find on sale and especially not in a good range of sizes. Snatch these up while they are still available.  Kissy Kissy runs very small, so I wouldn’t even bother buying anything in size 0-3 months except the sleeping gowns.  Use code “BABY40″ at checkout for the discount.  I am heading over to do some baby shower shopping right now…just be careful, I speak from personal experience when I tell you that getting hooked on Kissy Kissy can be an expensive habit…

9:57pm update…so sorry, i typed the promo code wrong when I first posted…it is “BABY40″, not “SHOP40″….my sincere apologies!

Throughout all of my pregnancies, I never was able to find a really nice maternity fleece that not only kept me warm on early morning or late evening walks to and from the gym but also didn’t make me look like a bowling ball.  I ultimately ended up buying a size XL fleece and just wearing that.  I looked…well, absolutely enormous in it to be truthful.  But it did the trick and I comforted myself with the knowledge that at least it was usually dark outside and no one could really see just how huge I looked.

maternityfleecePopular Swedish clothing designer Polarn o Pyret has recently released a fleece designed specifically for pregnancy and I have been wearing it for the past few weeks.  I love it.  We’ve come to expect superior design from the Swedes and POP’s Maternity Windfleece Jacket is no exception.  Upon appearance it just looks like a slim, fitted, front-zipper fleece.  When mine arrived, I had to do an inspection to find where the adjustable zippers were–and that is a good thing.  The fleece has very discreet vertical zippers underneath the arms.  kidsfleeceWhen you unzip them, a black elastic lining is released from the inside, allowing the jacket to stretch both forward and backward.  The zippers aren’t obvious because they are well-hidden and anyway, you would expect to see zippers on a fleece jacket.  And the jacket is made from Polarn o Pyret’s trademark polyester fleece material–it’s thin and doesn’t look bulky, but it’s well-lined, so it’s plenty warm.  I have POP fleeces made from the same material for all of the boys (click here to buy the children’s fleeces).  The best part of this jacket is that you can definitely wear this after the baby arrives and you are back down to your pre-pregnancy size.  Just zip the extra elastic lining back into the jacket and no one will know you are wearing maternity clothing.  This is the ultimate maternity investment.  You can wear it for the entire pregnancy, you can wear it after the pregnancy, and you can wear it for your next pregnancy, because black fleeces don’t really go out of style.

stripedromperAs a PF reader, beginning today it will be that much easier to invest in your new maternity fleece because Polarn o Pyret is offering all of you a 25% discount from today through the end of November.  That means the maternity fleece will cost you only about USD $60 here, reduced from USD $79.50.  The children’s fleece will cost you only about USD $44–and it comes in such great colors!  Just type in promotional code “POPISTA” when you check out to earn 25% off all full-priced items.

I’ve already blogged here about my love of Polarn o Pyret’s simple, functional maternity collection.  But the PF discount also applies to the outstanding children’s collection, including their famous children’s “Stripes” collection.  These cotton Striped Baby Rompers might be the most durable baby pajamas I have ever purchased–you can purchase the romper in red or navy here.  Four baby boys have worn them and they still look as good as new–no fading, no shrinking.  With the PF discount, the baby romper will cost only USD $31.50, reduced from USD $42.  The red romper would make a great set of Christmas PJ’s…

ilgufoshortsSaks Fifth Avenue is having a Kids’ Sale here this weekend and while the discount is not that great (it’s between 20% and 30%), there is a very good selection of items included in the sale.  I love Saks’ online children’s boutique because they have almost as many items for boys as they do for girls.  Of course, I am not quite insane enough to dress the boys in Armani suits and Prada loafers, but I do enjoy wondering who out there buys items such as these Il Gufo navy cargo shorts for their little boys (USD $168).  They are actually on sale here for USD $116.90, so if you are one of those people, you just scored yourself a bargain.  If your little boy is wearing these, what happens when he vomits tomato sauce into his lap? (Tomato sauce, I have come to realize, stains much more seriously on the way out than it does on the way in before it has been partly digested).

teacollectionsetWhat you should take advantage of are the Tea Collection items included in the Saks sale, particularly the knit sets like this one at right.  All three of the shirts in this set match both pairs of pants and these are great pieces for kids to wear to daycare or to school.  Tea Collection is made from very durable, qood-quality cotton, it washes well, and the clothing lasts forever.  Leighton is now wearing the same infant sets James wore as a baby and except for slight color fading, they are in perfect condition.  Normally the Tea Collection sets cost almost USD $125, but this toddler boys’ set is on sale here for USD $79.80.  There are also several infant boy’s and girl’s sets on sale.

burberry trenchMake sure you look through all of the items on sale, if only for your own entertainment.  If you hurry, you may be able to purchase one of the last of these Girl’s Burberry Gray Check Trench Coats. It is only left in a Girl’s size 10 but is reduced from USD $350 to USD $238 here.  If you think you might have a fashionista kicking you in there, maybe it’s worth buying and storing until she’s old enough for her first Burberry trench…

Just a quick weekend note to let you all know that Ralph Lauren launched its private sale online this weekend and I am very impressed by the selection of baby and kids’ clothing included in the sale.  Prices are up to 40% off, and you can earn an additional 15% off through Monday, November 9 when you use promotion code “NOV0509″ at checkout.  If you are busy setting up the nursery, they have a good selection of basic onesies and rompers included in the sale. Click here to browse all of the “Newborn Essentials” that are discounted.  I don’t need to assure you that the quality of Ralph Lauren’s children’s line is superb.  With this sale and the additional discount, you can treat your new bundle of joy to some high-end basics without feeling too guilty knowing he/she will surely throw up and poop all over them.

cashmere blanketAnd, if you are feeling extraordinarily hormonal and irrational, Ralph Lauren’s luxurious cashmere baby blankets are included in the sale here and are priced at approximately USD $175 with the discount (reduced from USD $295).  The blanket is available in blue, pink and white.  I received one of these as a gift when James was born and it was so beautiful.  Unfortunately, it somehow ended up in the dryer and shrunk to the size of a handkerchief.  But it was one of my most memorable baby gifts.

Happy shopping…

My infant son, Leighton, has turned out to be absolutely enormous and though he is not yet three months old, he is already more than 15 pounds.  Needless to add, it is now a battle to find a blanket large enough to swaddle him.  jungleI’ve been forced to consider putting him in a sleep sack very early and I recently turned back to Violet’s Peapod, my new favorite sleep sack designer. I received a Violet’s Peapod sleep sack as a gift for the twins this past Christmas and after using it a for a few weeks, I quickly purchased a second one.  Lined in cotton and insulated with wool, these sleep sack are the perfect weight for year-round wear.  They come in four different sizes and will fit a baby up to approximately 30 pounds and nearly three feet long.  But the best features of Violet’s sleep sacks are the fun patterns.  They are reversible and are solid on one side, but you won’t want to reverse them once you check out the unique, innovative patterns here.  I particularly like the “Jungle Delight” pattern at right.  The twins liked to fall asleep pointing to all the different animals on their sleep sack.

smilesThe unique patterns also make sleep sacks from Violet’s Peapod very unique baby gifts.  Coincidentally, I just received an email announcing that Violet’s Peapod is having a 25% off Friends & Family sale for the rest of July.  They are pricey sleep sacks at USD $53.95 each, so a 25% discount is quite helpful.  Just enter code “FF2009″ when you check out.  And if this is your first pregnancy and you can’t yet visualize life beyond swaddling, you will need one of these once your little bundle decides that being wrapped into a  cocoon is simply no longer acceptable.
