Fall 2009 Preview

nukaolivenukaolive#2I am happy to say that you all may finally put away/give away/burn your Juicy Couture maternity hoodies because I have discovered an equally priced, yet infinitely nicer substitute at Nuka Maternity.  If there is justice in the world, pregnant women will no longer feel compelled to buy those brightly colored, slightly aggravating velour Juicy hoodies because they have no other options. Instead, they will all head straight to Nuka Maternity here and opt for the tasteful, supremely soft hoodies and T-shirts designed by mom Julia Noik, an LA-based graphic designer who set out to make pregnancy more comfortable with Nuka and has most definitely succeeded.

The absolute must-have in Julia’s Fall 2009 Collection?  The V-Neck Hoodie, a supremely soft, cotton, short-sleeved hoodie with an empire waist and subtle ombre shading.  The empire waist has cute button detailing through the front, but is reinforced with two pieces of elastic through the back, allowing for some serious stretching. This hoodie is so cozy and comfortable that I’ve been wearing it daily since it arrived this past weekend.  I am not actually pregnant.  But I think it is the ultimate compliment to a maternity designer when a non-pregnant women chooses to wear her clothing.  I still haven’t decided if I am going to part with the V-Neck Hoodie and send it to my pregnant sister (sorry, Jane, I really like it).  And Leighton’s diaper exploded while I was wearing it so I can also promise that the Nuka V-Neck Hoodie washes quite nicely and does not shrink.

You can buy a Nuka V-neck Hoodie for yourself here at Nuka’s website for USD $110-it comes in olive, chocolate and caviar black.  I should warn you that Julia is not exaggerating when she called this the V-Neck Hoodie.  This is a plunging V-neck, so on the days you don’t feel like you need to flaunt it, you should plan to wear a camisole or tank underneath (the zipper stops at the bottom of the V-neck, you can’t pull it up any higher if you suddenly have an attack of modesty).

nukapeasantAlso, be sure to peruse Nuka’s entire collection while you are on the site.  I also like the Nuka Peasant Top, which is made from a cotton/jersey blend and is a comfortable option for the first or early second trimester when you aren’t yet at the stage where you really need an empire waist.  The lantern sleeves are a great touch and this looks really nice with jeans or even your most casual maternity sweatpants.  It is available here in orchid for USD $70.

You must order at least one of Nuka’s pieces just to try it out for yourself.  The cotton and jersey used to make Nuka’s maternity clothing is amazingly soft and is of the highest quality.  You’re pregnant, after all, you deserve a few beautiful and comfortable articles of maternity clothing.  Whether you are going out on the weekends or just hanging out at home, Nuka’s T-shirts and tops will be the maternity pieces you reach for every day…and probably at night too, they are just that comfortable.

yellowslickerIf this is not your first pregnancy and you have already navigated high-end baby fashion, you are probably already familiar with Petit Bateau’s clothing.  The French brand has been around for over 100 years and their luxurious cotton baby and toddler clothing can be found all over the world in their own stores as well as in baby boutiques and department stores.  I am addicted to their boys cotton pajamas for both summer and winter and I have not been able to resist buying each of my children one of Petit Bateau’s classic yellow rain slickers, available here on Petit Bateau’s website.  How adorable are these raincoats–they are quite pricey and I do live in a climate where it never, ever rains, but the boys did wear them a few times in New York this past summer and watching them all toddle out the door together in their rain coats was worth the investment.  I even found one in Leighton’s size here at Saks–the little guy needs protection from the elements, too.

pbtopMoving on, Petit Bateau has very recently expanded its clothing collection to include a small line of high-quality cotton maternity wear.  Several pieces from the collection are now available online here on the brand’s US website.  The collection is mostly available in black, but there are a few bright spots of color, including this fun pink maternity turtleneck, which is available here for USD $53.  pbdressI also like the cut and the neckline of this basic black maternity dress, available here for USD $111.

At first glance, Petit Bateau’s maternity collection looks like a perfectly adequate selection of basics, nothing to get too excited about. But if you are familiar with the quality of Petit Bateau’s clothing, then you already know that investing in one or two of their maternity pieces is likely to be a wise decision. Petit Bateau’s cotton withstands wash after wash without fading or shrinking and I know this very, very well being that my boys are not kind to their pajamas. It is truly amazing to think of the stains I have managed to remove from Petit Bateau’s pajamas and I have yet to throw a pair away.  I’ve ordered the turtleneck to give it a test run, so I will be sure to report back to you once I have it.  Here’s hoping Petit Bateau’s maternity line enjoys some success and inspires other designers to create fashion for pregnant women…

jordan 180My apologies for the brief blogging hiatus, but we are just back from a long weekend vacation in Jordan at the Dead Sea.  The Israelis have for some reason not quite figured out how to build and run a luxury hotel, so if you want to spend a couple of days ordering exotic, overpriced drinks and having cool, strawberry-scented towels brought to you poolside, you need to head across the border to Jordan. Here is a great photo of the boys after an afternoon of serious swimming in the hotel’s numerous infinity pools.  They all passed out from exhaustion every night by 7pm–truly a successful vacation.

This week only, the online maternity boutique Nine Months to Grow is offering 20% off its entire Fall 2009 maternity collection when you type in “Fall20″ at checkout.  If you haven’t shopped Nine Months to Grow yet, take a look here.  It is a small, mom-owned boutique that carries a good selection of easy-to-find maternity brands, but I find that they often carry pieces you can’t find in other online maternity boutiques. And Cassandra, the founder of 9 Months to Grow, runs good promotions, so be sure to join her email list.  noppiessweaterThis fall, she has a wide selection of Dutch maternity line Noppies available on the site.  Noppies only has brand stores open in the Netherlands, Belgium and Germany, but you can sometimes find a few of their items in online boutiques. Noppies makes good quality, basic maternity clothing that is reasonably priced and extremely versatile. noppiessweater#2Noppies is best known for its over-the-belly pants (which I blogged about here), but 9 Months to Grow is carrying a good selection of hard-to-find Noppies sweaters this fall, including these Woodmere Maternity wool/cotton blend henley sweaters in both moss green and grey.  I love the colors, they look perfect for layering and at only $70 each here, you can justify buying both with your 20% discount.

moreofmeBPregnant Fashionista’s “Maternity Item of the Week” at TheBump.com this week is from one of my favorite new maternity designers, More of Me Maternity.  I blogged here about More of Me’s debut collection, released for the Spring of 2009.  DC-based designer Jessica Boulanger has now released her Fall 2009 collection, which includes her own favorite, the MomBoHoChic dress in new colors–a solid, soft heather grey and this bold Buffalo plaid pattern.  Jessica was nice enough to send me a sample of this dress last week and I was most impressed by how comfortable it is.  This is the kind of maternity dress you’ll have to stop yourself from wearing too often, because you’ll want to put it on every day.  It is available here for USD $225. I don’t want to get anyone’s hopes up, but I think I have discovered a solution to one of the most vexing maternity fashion conundrums out there–how to avoid buying yourself a pair of maternity leggings.

Before I tell you about the potential solution, I just want to make clear that I absolutely despise leggings.  I know they are all the rage in the fashion world these days, but I am actually old enough to have already participated in a trendy leggings phase back in the late 1980′s and that was quite enough for me.  I do not think anyone should be wearing them, but I do understand how tempting they are when one is pregnant.  They are comfortable, they work well with many of today’s maternity tunics and mini dresses, they are warmer than tights, and come late in the pregnancy, skinny jeans are not going to be what you want to put on in the morning.  As my friend Debbie points out every time I write here about how much I dislike leggings on pregnant women, I myself owned a pair when I was very pregnant with the twins.  Luckily the last few weeks of that pregnancy were a blur and I was on bed rest, so I didn’t really ever go out in them anyway.

prada pantNow, it may be easier for all of you to just say no to maternity leggings because Jules & Jim, the Canadian maternity designer, has released the black “Prada” pant for Fall 2009 and this rayon/nylon/spandex blended skinny pant should usurp leggings in all of our closets.  pradapant#2I found this pant a few weeks ago and was very intrigued, so I sent it to my sister for testing (yes, I am still shopping for and buying maternity clothing–very sad, I know, but all of you are benefiting from my curious addiction).  My sister confirms that this is a perfect alternative to the legging, plus, unlike leggings, these have a slight flare at the ankle so you may wear these pants comfortably with a heel without looking like Madonna, circa 1985.

Fitted through the hip and thigh, these pants are slimming and will work with a shorter top if you are up to it.  But if you are feeling a little shy about your posterior, they are easily paired with a tunic or mini dress or a nice, cozy maternity sweater.  The Prada pant is a bit dressier than leggings so it may not necessarily be suitable for throwing on and running down the street to Starbucks for your decaf latte.  But if you need to do that, please just grab your sweatpants and leave your leggings behind.  If only Lindsay Lohan would do that more often…

prada pant#3The Prada pant is machine washable, but I would stick to line drying them–with such a narrow cut, you don’t want to risk that they shrink.  The Jules & Jim Prada pant is available at Bellydance here for USD $87, a very reasonable price for a pair of pants you will wear constantly.

james-tractor 179james-tractor#2 180I am just back from an absolutely filthy afternoon of riding horses and climbing farm tractors.  Now that James and the twins have evolved into bona fide little boys, I am starting to catch glimpses of what my future with my children is going to involve and it is unfortunately not going to include my own personal favorite activities, such as shopping trips and visits to the spa for manicures and pedicures.  These boys are absolutely obsessed with tractors, diggers, excavators, garbage trucks, etc. and it seems the dirtier they are, the better.  I may even have to break one of my cardinal rules and start wearing sneakers during the day when I take them out (I can’t stand it when moms wear sneakers to anywhere but the gym).  Here is James taking Oliver for a ride on his mini John Deere tractor.  This is our new favorite activity and driving/riding on the tractor is the primary topic of discussion throughout the day.  Oliver is wearing a helmet because, contrary to James’ own opinion, James is not yet a skilled tractor driver.

Upon my return from climbing mud-laden farm tractors yesterday, I was thrilled to hear that my sister is expecting a girl in February.  That means I will soon have another niece, who will hopefully be at least mildly interested in inheriting my designer handbag collection someday.  It does not seem that my gang of tractor lovers is destined to be interested in handbags.

nc_colorblocknc_dressyVeronique Maternity in Manhattan has also posted its fall collection online and if you, like me, spend a lot of time lusting after Italian maternity designer Nicol Caramel’s clothing, this is your one and only opportunity to find the Fall/Winter 2009/10 collection for sale in the United States (click here to check out the full Nicol Caramel Fall 2009 collection online).  I’ve raved about Nicol Caramel’s viscose/nylon blend over-the-belly pants here before and they are available again this fall at Veronique here in both black and chocolate.  But the real must-haves this fall are the dresses.  I love this black and grey color block dress –how perfect is this dress for the office?  Or, this black halter cocktail dress, which will definitely stand out at the office Christmas party.  View Veronique’s entire online Fall 2009 dress collection here–the Nicol Caramel dresses are all priced between USD $260 and USD $325. Whenever I first view Nicol Caramel’s newest maternity collection, I always wonder why it is that no one in America is designing maternity clothing like this and I think, I should just do it myself. Unfortunately, I am currently extremely busy climbing dirty tractors in Jerusalem, so I am forced to ask the same question over and over.

Veronique also has a great denim collection available online.  The newest maternity styles from both J Brand and Juicy Couture are available.

blossomphotoExciting news for Fall 2009 keeps rolling in here at Pregnant Fashionista, and I am thrilled to announce that Blossom Mother and Child, my favorite maternity boutique in London, is offering PF readers an exclusive 15% online discount off their new Fall/Winter 2009 collection.  If you read this blog regularly, then you need no introduction to Blossom’s maternity collection.  The quality is impeccable, the designs are fashion-forward, and each of their pieces is absolutely worth the investment.

Recognizing that shopping at Blossom is a pricey endeavor, particularly for those of us shopping with the abysmal US dollar, Blossom’s online staff wants to make sure we are all nevertheless able to take advantage of the new Fall Collection, which is now available online here.  The new collection includes some of my own tried and true favorites, as well as some spectacular newcomers.  What impulsive hormone-ridden pregnant woman can possibly say no to this new Silk Smock Dress by Clements Ribeiro for Blossom, with the sequin detailing at the neckline and the exquisite pleating at the hem?  With a pair of opaque black tights and black boots?  No one will even know you’re enormous, you’ll look so good.  And it comes in both black and raspberry here for USD $487 (approximately USD $414 with your PF discount).

blossomknitdressDanielle at Blossom particularly recommends this Knit Merino Wool dress at left, which is part of the new collection and available here for USD $213 (approximately USD $181 with the PF discount).  And it’s available in four great colors, including raspberry, aubergine, grey and black.  It also has a matching long cardigan to throw over it for the office if you are desiring a bit more coverage once the size of your bump is no longer “cute.”

detroit topIf you prefer that your Blossom investment be more of a basic, I highly recommend Blossom’s lovely Detroit Twist Maternity Top, which is available here for USD $162 (approximately USD $137 with your PF discount).  Made from a 92% modal/8% elastane blend, I used this shirt for nursing and because the material is such high quality and didn’t stretch out, I was able to keep wearing it even as I (very) slowly shrunk around the middle.  In fact, I wore it the other day to drop James off at school because I just really like it.  See what I mean?  Blossom’s clothing is so beautiful, you’ll want to wear it even after you’re done with your pregnancy and with nursing.  There are very, very few maternity pieces about which I can say that.

blossomdenimAnd if you are looking for the ultimate basic, Blossom has its classic maternity denim pencil skirt back up on its website for the fall.  I blogged about this skirt almost a year and a half ago here and as is the case with many of our belongings, it has since gone missing due to our nomadic lifestyle (and my perpetual disorganization).  Use this discount and buy this skirt.  I’ve looked and you won’t find another one that fits as well or looks as flattering on the very pregnant physique. This skirt is cut so well, it qualifies as a first trimester through third trimester pencil skirt–a very rare find in a fitted maternity skirt.

In order to receive the Pregnant Fashionista exclusive discount, type in promotional code “18US44″ upon checkout.  The discount is good from today through the end of September.  As always, remember that Blossom runs small–if you aren’t sure on sizing, order one size up.

Another day in Jerusalem and yet another truly bad haircut.  I am not going to bore you yet again with my futile efforts to find someone here who can cut hair properly.  Suffice it to say, I now look like Joan Jett from her “Love is a Battlefield” days.  All I need is a teasing comb and some Aqua Net and I am working proof that the ’80′s are unfortunately back, even here in Jerusalem.  Sadly, I don’t believe that people who are old enough to have partaken in ’80′s fashion the first time around should be trying it out again.

Bad haircut notwithstanding, I am excited to see that Pure T’s new Fall/Winter 2009 maternity line is now available for purchase on Pure T’s website. I’ve heard of Brooklyn-based Pure T’s line of high-end maternity tops before, but didn’t happen to own any while I was pregnant.  puret safireBut during my wonderful tour of “A New View Maternity” in New York City at the end of July, I was able to go through samples of Pure T’s Fall/Winter 2009 line. Without a doubt, the Short Sleeve Soft Cowl Turtleneck was one of the top 5 items I saw that day. Both my sister and I tried it on in this gorgeous “Sa-fire” color pictured at left and added it to our Fall 2009 must-have list. If sa-fire isn’t your first choice, the turtleneck is available in seven other colors, including the lipstick color pictured here and the more neutral black and vanilla colors.  puret lipstickThis top is made from very high-quality cotton and just feels very comfortable and cozy when you put it on. It is extra long, ensuring it will last through all three trimesters.  The sleeves are sufficiently long enough to cover the upper arms and the neckline is quite flattering.  I am not usually a lover of turtlenecks, but this one is quite loose-fitting.

You can purchase the top now in almost all 8 colors on Pure T’s website for USD $60 here. And with the short sleeves, it works well for layering once the cold weather hits and everybody else is freezing but you are suffering from inconvenient hot flashes that may require you to unexpectedly disrobe. If you are not subject to those horrible hot flashes caused by pregnancy hormones, the shirt is available in the same colors in a long-sleeved version here for USD $66.  Be sure to look through the entire selection on Pure T’s site, I was quite impressed at the high-quality cotton they use.

Pure T’s Short Sleeve Cowl Turtleneck does have an unfinished-looking hem at the bottom, which you can see in these photos and is not a look everyone necessarily likes.  I thought it looked OK as long as you are wearing it as a casual top. I’m not so sure you can pair it with a skirt or dressy trousers and pull it off at the office, it might look a bit sloppy if you don’t have a sweater or a jacket on over it.

DSC_0825-1Today is our last day in Tuscany before we head back to Jerusalem tomorrow.  The boys are true lovers of Italy, it seems–unending amounts of pasta, pizza, prosciutto, and gelato.  We tried to feed them some vegetables last night and they simply weren’t interested.  Israel, where the locals put chopped tomatoes and cucumbers on absolutely every type of of food, is going to be a rude awakening for them.  Oliver just cannot get enough pasta and tomato sauce.  Here he is shoveling it in his mouth in the old Tuscan town of Volterra (and that bag you see hanging on his chair is my newly purchased Italian handbag, which he decided to wipe his hands on after he was finished with his lunch–I don’t know why I bother).

In honor of my return to the Holy Land, where figuring out how to nurse your baby in public is a serious dilemma, I want to tell you about the very clever nursing scarves I discovered while I was in New York.  They are new for Fall 2009 from Maternal America and although they look like regular scarves when on, they are actually designed for discreet nursing.  The scarf has a whole in the middle for your head and when you are ready to feed the baby, you simply unravel the scarve and it becomes an instant “Hooter Hider,” so to speak.  No worries about trying to keep a blanket wrapped around your neck while you nurse or holding it in your teeth while you shift the baby from side to side.  Most importantly for my purposes, it guarantees that my collarbone is covered, which is apparently what is required in order to nurse comfortably on a park bench in Jerusalem (I tried to do that with a blanket, but I am just not that coordinated).

duematernity_2069_394800693These aren’t the most luxurious, high-quality scarves. They are made from a polyester/rayon blend and you will not want to cozy up with this scarf in the cold weather.  I find that Maternal America does not make great quality clothing, which is why I rarely write about them.  But the nursing scarf only costs USD $32, it comes in a range of colors, and Maternal America should be commended for coming up with a very good idea.  Being that your nursing scarf is going to be covered in breast milk and spit-up, it’s not as if you want it to be cashmere anyway.  And they are certainly a better option than those awful vinyl nursing bibs that women use.  Nursing is messy, but only one of the participants should be wearing a bib and it is not you.

The scarves are available in Due Maternity’s online boutique here and in Pickles & Ice Cream’s online boutique here.  For some reason, it only costs USD $28 in Figure 8 Maternity’s online boutique here.
