Dresses

When I first saw this photo of a very pregnant Selma Blair strolling LA in this stunning maxi dress, I did a thorough search for it online, couldn’t find it for sale anywhere, and simply assumed it wasn’t actually a maternity dress, but rather a designer dress some doting designer had converted just for pregnant Selma and not for the rest of us. I’ve kept my eyes out since then, because I am obviously a bit obsessive when it comes to shopping and damn, I really wanted this dress. I love the dark colors and love the way it drapes on Selma despite her being incredibly pregnant. If I could only figure out where to buy it, PF and her readers could also look so effortlessly fabulous in our third trimester.

And then last night, I simply happened upon the Selma Maxi Dress for sale in Queen Bee’s online maternity boutique. And miraculously, the dress is not only a true maternity dress, but is priced at only USD $136 and designed right here in the USA by LA-based maternity designer 2 Chix. Of course, it’s already sold out here, so you’ll have to order it from Australia. But having to pay $25 for flat rate international shipping gives you a reason to order something else from Queen Bee, Sydney’s premier maternity boutique.
Queen Bee stocks many maternity designers you’ve already heard of, as well as a few local Australian maternity designers you probably haven’t. Make sure to peruse the maternity pieces from Australian designers Fillyboo and Lil Designs. Yes, it’s summer in Australia, so these are warm weather pieces, but I’ve seen many of the Spring/Summer 2012 lines here in the US already and you won’t see anything like these on-trend dresses and blouses at your local Pea in a Pod.

Have you heard of Tiffany Rose Maternity? If you live stateside, then probably not. The UK-based maternity designer was founded in 2003 and specializes in occasion maternity dresses. Although it has outfitted numerous British celebrities, Tiffany Rose dresses are designed and manufactured in the UK and are not widely available for sale in the United States.

The Lola Dress

Well, they should be, because PF just ordered her first Tiffany Rose dress and I absolutely love it. While the line focuses on occasionwear, it does offer a small, but unique collection of day-appropriate dresses that work for the office or for that one day you feel absolutely enormous and decide that a beautiful dress is in order. I really wanted something that I could wear to the office and then wear to a few evening holiday events and I chose the Lola Dress, which is available in a deep maroon with a blush-colored draped neckline and sash. The Lola dress is made from very forgiving jersey and has a subtle shimmer to it–no worries, it is very much day-appropriate. I was a bit worried about the neckline but it is actually quite demure and covers absoluely everything it should. My favorite aspect of this dress is the fact that it is as much a third-trimester dress as it is a first-trimester dress. The material is so stretchy that if I am still upright, I will still be wearing my pre-pregnancy size come the end of February.

The Amelia Dress

I am such a huge fan of my new Lola dress that I am currently pondering which of the Tiffany Rose Winter Maternity Collection should be my next investment. The Blue Lace Amelia Dress reminds me of Kate Middleton in that gorgeous blue lace Erdem Resort 2012 dress last summer, but who am I kidding, I am way too far gone to be channeling the size 0 Duchess these days. Make sure you take a look at the collection, if for no other reason than you unfortunately will not see many tasteful, sophisticated maternity dresses like this for sale here in the United States. Over here, we are stuck waiting for Mariah Carey and Jessica Simpson to release new maternity lines. I don’t need to tell you that tasteful and sophisticated are not likely words I will be using to describe those upcoming maternity collections.

Kipling Dress in Pomme Sky Print

Though her maternity line has not reappeared in this fall’s collection, Diane von Furstenberg remains one of those non-maternity designers whose collections always include a little something for pregnant women. Her adjustable iconic wrap dresses have seen many a newly pregnant woman through an awkward first trimester and her collections can always be counted on for those few blousy pieces that are easily incorporated into a pregnant fashionista’s maternity wardrobe.

This fall, the chiffon Kipling Dress fits the bill, and though it is not designed for maternity, this dress only seems to fit better the larger one grows. The dress is cut shorter in the front than in the back and achieves a trapeze effect throughout, with a longer drape in the back of the dress. During the second trimester, I felt as if I simply looked like a strangely shaped woman in a trapeze dress, so I belted it at the empire waist and wore it that way. But now that I am able to fill it out better, I actually prefer wearing it unbelted. Though the hem looks short in these catalogue photos, these are some very tall models. This dress hit well below the knee when I purchased it (I am 5’5″) and now that I am 25 weeks, hits just above the knee (the hem hangs about 28″ from the natural waist). It looks great with black tights and knee-high boots.

Kipling Dress in Black Chevron Print

It does come with a semi-sheer slip underneath that is not as forgiving in the fit department as the dress itself and is intended to hug the body while the dress covers it. I am still wearing the included slip, but it’s not going to last much longer. Plan to wear your own black maternity slip underneath come the third trimester.

The Kipling Dress is currently available in a Black Chevron Print at DVF.com, in a bright solid teal at Cusp, and in a pink and black Pomme Sky print at Saks.

The details of my disappointing maternity shopping experience at Forever 21 are going to have to wait a day because Diane von Furstenberg just announced that her Friends & Family sale starts today and all of you newly pregnant fashionistas need to head right over here and buy yourself the Julian wrap jersey dress in black or chocolate brown or ideally, both colors before it sells out. Use promotional code “FRIENDS20″ when you check out and you’ll pay only USD $238.40 for this crucial early pregnancy wardrobe essential (it retails for USD $298). This is not a maternity dress, but buy one size larger than your pre-pregnancy size and use this dress to get you through those awkward weeks when you know you’re pregnant, but no one else does. One week your breasts will be bigger, the next week your stomach will be bigger, and the next week your posterior will be bigger, but this dress will still fit. I recently found my chocolate brown Julian in one of our moving boxes and had a moment of nostalgia for those first trimester mornings when that wrap dress was truly the only thing I was able to squeeze myself into. It’s also a good option for postpartum wear…and even works moderately well as a nursing dress.

Since I first spotted it back in April, I have been waiting for Maternal America’s new “denim” jersey maternity dress to pop up for sale online. I have been really into denim dresses over the past few months, but being that denim is the not the most forgiving or flexible fabric, the options for a denim maternity dress are limited. It is neither fun nor feasible to try and stretch a stiff piece of denim over a pregnant belly. MA has instead combined a black cotton top with a jersey material that looks just like denim and though it’s not the real thing, it comes pretty close aesthetically speaking.  The wide sash is also made from the denim jersey material and works well to bring the two fabrics together.  And, unlike real denim, it stretches–need I write more?

I am usually pretty skeptical about Maternal America because their clothing is just everywhere and purchasing one of their dresses makes it very likely that the pregnant woman in the office next to yours will own the same dress. But this dress was special enough, I think it’s worth the risk. And don’t worry, it is not as short as it looks in this photo, this model must be six feet tall. It came to a very respectable knee-length when I saw the sample. Curiously, this dress is selling for USD $126 here at Euphoria Maternity, USD $124 here at Due Maternity and only USD $112 here at Chulamama Maternity.

It is nice to see everything you’ve been eyeing for the summer months go on sale, but it is also nice to see the Fall 2010 items start rolling in. I had a great preview of samples from the new Fall 2010 maternity lines back in April and I made a list of my favorites to make sure I posted about them as soon as they went on sale in the online boutiques. Olian Maternity always occupies a huge corner of the sample showroom I go to and I usually browse through their offerings without ever being really impressed. I don’t tend to like their choice of prints for pregnancy and I don’t feel as if their pieces are ever that special, particularly considering the huge portion of the market they occupy.

I did, however, feel differently about this ruched wrap dress. Obviously every pregnant fashionista will have one or two or three wrap dresses in her closet. But finally Olian is giving us something a little bit different with this ruched raspberry dress. What pregnant woman doesn’t appreciate a bit of extra ruching? This is more than your basic wrap dress and it makes choosing what type of undergarment you are going to be wearing on top a bit easier because of the ruching (with the V-neck, you will probably have to wear a camisole). And I really like the color, as it is a bit different than the typical colors available for maternity dresses. Isabella Oliver used to sell its Ruffle Wrap Dress in a raspberry color and I wore that dress to all sorts of special occasions. Olian Maternity’s Ruched Wrap Dress is now available here at Euphoria Maternity for USD $126. It is still available in all sizes. Olian runs true to size, but whatever you do, don’t put their items in the dryer.

By the way, I congratulated my friend Reena on her newly announced pregnancy in my last posting and I lamented the lack of maternity fashion options she was facing in Jerusalem. Silly me–turns out that a lack of fashion is definitely not Reena’s most serious problem.I had forgotten what it is like to be pregnant in the face of Israeli security. I had an awful time getting into coffee shops and hotels when I was pregnant in Jerusalem, particularly when I was pregnant with the twins and did look as if I had to be hiding something sinister underneath my clothing. But Reena is a journalist and she has more important things to do than pick up a latte or enjoy a hotel buffet breakfast, which were my primary daily activities in Jerusalem when I was pregnant. Poor Reena was on her way back from working on a story in Gaza this past week when the Israelis at the border crossing subjected her to a full body search. The IDF forces simply could not figure out why Reena’s jeans had an elastic piece attached to the top that stretched all the way over her belly. Obviously, the Israelis assumed, she was using the elastic piece to transport something illegal into Israel, not simply to keep her jeans from falling down. Whomever is training the IDF might need to add a course on the rudimentary basics of maternity wear. Like I said last time, best of luck, Reena.  You will clearly need it…

I am sorry I have been such a terrible blogger this past week, but my husband was back in Jerusalem last week and he took his laptop with him and left me only with the iPad. Wow, I hate that damned thing. I fought with it for the better part of the week before I just gave up and put it away and used my blackberry for everything. I readily admit I am not at all tech-savvy, but I am not a complete idiot and that iPad just drove me absolutely nuts. There–that is the first and last time I will offer my opinion regarding anything pertaining to technology.

Anyway, Angelina Jolie popularized the maternity maxi dress back during her first pregnancy and since then, just about every maternity designer has released its own version. In fact, many non-maternity designers advertise their empire-waisted maxi dresses as maternity-friendly and as long as you are all willing to go and have the dresses properly hemmed so they don’t ride up in the front (I absolutely hate that look), I fully support donning a Splendid or Ella Moss or Rachel Pally maxi dress during your pregnancies.

One of my favorite maternity maxi dresses is currently on sale at More of Me maternity, discounted 30% when you use the promotional code “HOT” at checkout. Every woman to whom I have suggested this dress subsequently informs me that she loves it. At USD $180, the price is a bit hard to swallow compared to other maternity maxi dresses out there, but this dress is a keeper and will be a perpetual part of your maternity wardrobe from pregnancy to pregnancy. Click here to buy the dress in navy–it is still available in all sizes, but does run slightly big.

Pregnant British women are raving about Oscar London, a new UK-based designer that specializes in flowing maxi dresses. They are not specifically designed for maternity, but are being carried in all the the top maternity boutiques over the pond. My pregnant friend just purchased the “Venus,” a V-necked maxi dress with an empire waist that is available in black, purple and this unusual floral print. The Venus is currently available here directly from the Oscar London site for GBP 89 (USD $135). After she bought her dress, they offered her 25% off her next purchase–a clear incentive to buy the Sophia dress as well. The Sophia is also pregnancy-friendly, i.e., you can wear a bra with it, which is always a bonus. I love this mauve color.

And I also really love this long-sleeved maternity maxi dress from NOM. It’s clearly not for this insanely humid weather we have on the East Coast right now, but it is perfect for fall. Bellydance still has it available in a size Small on sale here for USD $94. You’ll need a camisole underneath this dress…

And a quick congrats to my friend Reena, who just announced she is expecting her first baby. Reena is gorgeous, stylish and is most definitely muse-worthy material for Pregnant Fashionista, despite currently living in fashion-starved Jerusalem. Best of luck, Reena!

I am just back from a holiday weekend in New York and Connecticut and am full of new maternity wear suggestions for the long, hot summer ahead. (It is, by the way, a balmy 101 degrees in Jerusalem today, so cool yourself off with the idea that no matter how hot it is where you are, it is hotter here). I managed to sneak into a few different maternity boutiques over the past few days and even discovered a brand new maternity line in a boutique in New Haven, Connecticut–quite the shock, as that city is hardly a fashion mecca. I have been a delinquent blogger these past few weeks, but I promise a new posting ever day this week, provided my numerous offspring does not figure out an innovative, new way to ensure I have absolutely no free time.

For those of you who have been emailing and asking for a dress recommendation for your upcoming baby shower, I think I have found you the perfect selection–behold Moody Mamas’ new Strapless Watercolor dress. I have made no secret of my skepticism when it comes to the quality of the Moody Mamas line, particularly the Fierce collection, designed by Christian Siriano. In recent months, I have been in touch with the founders of Moody Mamas, Elise and Martalisa, and they have assured me that they have been working hard on improving the quality of their line. According to Elise, Moody Mamas is now using a larger company to manufacture its collection and the quality has consequently improved. I spotted this dress in Bellydance Maternity’s online boutique a few weeks ago and asked Elise to send me a sample–she was unable to, but I thought it was so cute that I went ahead and ordered one for myself (nope, not pregnant again, but yes, still ordering maternity clothing). Elise is right. As I wrote here after viewing Moody Mamas’ Fall 2010 line, there is a noticeable improvement in the quality of these pieces. I compared this Summer 2010 Strapless Watercolor dress to another chiffon dress I purchased from the Fierce line in Fall 2008 and there is a marked difference in the quality of the fabric, as well as the workmanship. And this new dress is less expensive than the dress I bought 18 months ago. The Strapless Watercolor dress is available here on Moody Mamas’ website here for USD $190.

I personally think the catalogue photos for this dress are irresistible, but I should warn you that this dress has a sweetheart neckline and is actually a bit short. This is a shower dress for the pregnant fashionista looking to flaunt what she’s got, so to speak. Were I a particularly busty pregnant woman, this would not be my first choice. Besides the obvious problem with the lack of straps, the neckline also allows for the display of a bit of cleavage. You can definitely wear a strapless bra underneath this dress, but make sure it has a decent dip in the middle. The strapless maternity bandeau bras will not work with this particular dress.

Otherwise, I love this dress. Squeeze those swollen feet into a pair of towering peeptoes, and you will look fabulous at your shower.

For those of you PF readers who are currently pregnant in New York City or somewhere nearby, New View Maternity opened its sample sale today in the Fashion District. This sample sale isn’t highly publicized, so PF readers are among the lucky few who are now officially in the know.  New View Maternity is a fashion showroom completely devoted to maternity wear and New View oversees the East Coast distribution of most of the best-known maternity lines, including Olian, Japanese Weekend, Pure t, Maternal America, Hatch, and Moody Mamas, among others. Samples from the Spring/Summer 2010 lines will all be on sale at wholesale prices from today through the end of the month. But sizes are limited, so try and get there ASAP. The address is 347 W. 36th Street, Suite 1602, and the sale will be open Tuesdays, Wednesdays, and Thursdays from 930am to 330pm. Pure T maternity shirts recently joined the ranks of my absolute favorite maternity basics. I unfortunately didn’t discover them until just after my own pregnancies, but I got my sister completely hooked on them. And based on a few reader emails, I think I managed to get a few of you hooked on them as well here. Pure T’s pieces are just so soft and comfortable and their Fall 2009 palette was chocked full of gorgeous jewel colors. I sorted through the Fall 2010 samples while I was in New York and they are, of course, also beautiful. High-quality cotton, well-cut styles, and great colors–what more could you ask for in a maternity T-shirt?

Well, you could ask that those same T-shirts be cut into lightweight cotton summer maternity dresses–which is exactly what Pure T has done in its Spring/Summer 2010 line for Rosie Pope Maternity. Pure T has taken its popular T-shirts–like the striped V-neck Brooklyn T or the Henley T–and turned them into 100% cotton summer day dresses. I would have bought the Brooklyn dress for myself this summer if it had looked just a little less like a maternity dress. But if you are reading this, chances are you need a maternity dress. The Brooklyn dress is available here in Rosie Pope’s online boutique for USD $98 and the Henley dress is available for USD $98 in white and tangerine here and here. Pure T’s dresses are cut loosely, so you may need a belt around your hips or around your (new) waist when going out. But chances are, you’ll wear them loose when you are lounging at home in the hot summer weather or even to bed in those last few days of pregnancy when the line between clothing and pajamas becomes very blurry.

My apologies to all for this week’s temporary blogging hiatus. We flew the boys to the UK on Monday to visit family for their spring break vacation and it took a few days for them to adjust to the bitterly cold English countryside and to the concept that they could wake up and see sheep and cows from their bedroom windows. As you might imagine, when you are three years old and there is a mooing cow right outside the window, it is rather hard to settle down to sleep.

But, today’s posting was worth the wait, as I am announcing another exclusive promotional discount for Pregnant Fashionista readers. From today through April 15th, PF readers are entitled to a 25% discount on all items purchased from new independent maternity designer Jessica Boulanger at More of Me Maternity. Just type in code “FASHIONISTA” at checkout in More of Me’s online boutique here. I have blogged frequently about More of Me and I am a tremendous fan of this new maternity line, designed out of Washington, DC. Jessica designs clothing that is chic and of-the-moment, but also incredibly practical, as it is generously cut and therefore intended to fit to the end of the third trimester. If this is your first pregnancy, I challenge you to find a baby shower dress that both fits and flatters at Week 36.

With wedding/graduation/shower season coming up, I asked Jessica to personally recommend a few of her favorites for Spring 2010 and she readily obliged. Jessica recommends the Momshell dress in Pool, pictured at left. “This dress looks really, really cute belted above the bump,” Jessica writes and she suggests checking out J Crew’s Whipsnake Belt here for the perfect accessory.

The designer also suggests the Favorite Shirtdress in Lilac, pictured at right, and also worn with a belt above the bump. But this dress can also be worn with no belt at all, just “pile it with layers of necklaces” and you are good to go, Jessica suggests.

I can personally vouch for Jessica’s third suggestion, the Navy “Take it to the Maxi” Dress, which I own and wore throughout the last weeks of my most recent pregnancy. I absolutely love this dress and if you aren’t necessarily looking for a special occasion dress, but need a great weekend day dress for spring and summer, this is it. Jessica agrees and she writes: “This dress WORKS. It can truly be worn to a wedding or knocking around on a Saturday afternoon with flip flops and shades. Also, It fits beautifully up until you’re about to pop AND AFTER. Don’t ask me how this is possible, but somehow it is…I wore my maxi dress until the day I delivered Oscar (and I was no small girl) and for about 2 months after. Also, this dress is designed to skim the floor. I wanted to make something that would make women feel elegant and beautiful even with really large, swollen ankles. This dress hides them.”

This promotion come at the request of several PF readers who have become ardent fans of More of Me and I’d like to thank Jessica for responding to my repeated requests for a special PF discount. So, go forth and shop ladies, this is exactly what you asked for. Remember that More of Me is cut slightly large so stick to your pre-pregnancy size and size down if you are unsure of what size you should order…
