Diaper Bags

I had something already written for today, but I woke up to discover that Kate Spade is holding a rather amazing Surprise Sale, offering 75% off a very nice collection of items for today only. This is particularly relevant to all of us, as a nice selection of the Kate Spade diaper bags are included in the sale. The Jubilee Stripe Stevie Baby Bag is among the sale items, reduced from its usual USD $398 to only USD $179. In addition to diaper bags, jewelry, clothing, shoes, and accessories are also included. This is a great sale, head over there and buy up before supplies are gone.

All sales are final, but if you are able to buy a Kate Spade diaper bag for $179, you should be immune to buyer’s remorse anyway.

And don’t forget, the Isabella Oliver Spree sale continues, with a 39% discount on all maternitywear and nursingwear today using promotional code “SPREE39″.

4 DAYS ONLY – SAVE 35% to 47% OFF on all Maternity Clothing at the Isabella Oliver Spree Sale. (Offer valid From May 14 to May 17, 2012 only) Be sure to check daily for the new promo code & qualifying details!

Fashionwise, it’s a tough spring to be pregnant or postpartum. Vivid colors are just about everywhere and while there are numerous maternitywear options out there for the pregnant woman looking to embrace color, most of us are predictably choosing black over bright pink. It makes sense–neon pink isn’t exactly one’s first choice when one is packing on the pounds. And we postpartum women are not dying to embrace loud, attention-calling colors while still in a position where we have to explain to complete strangers that no, we’re not pregnant anymore, but thanks for thoughtlessly asking when I’m due.

The answer to that dilemma? A hot pink diaper bag, of course. If you can’t wear it, carry it. I was celebrity blog surfing recently and spotted Mariska Hargitay toting what looked like an impossibly irresistible hot pink leather diaper bag and, believe it or not, I was correct. Mariska is currently carrying the “Singapore Sling Diaper Bag,” the signature diaper bag from Singapore-based bag designer Tribe. Tribe, launched in July 2011, is a very small line devoted entirely to designing luxury diaper bags. The collection is comprised of three different bags: the Singapore Sling, the Orchard Tote Diaper Bag, and the Raffles Diaper Bag.  The bags range in price from $400 to $530 and are all made of leather with nylon-lined interiors. While the bags themselves are gorgeous pieces, I’m most excited about the colors. Mariska’s raspberry bag also comes in sea blue, aquamarine, and a deep, midnight blue. The buyer can choose gold or silver hardware for most of the bags.

With a bag like this on my shoulder, I feel less worried about the fact that I apparently still look pregnant.

After Decadent Monday’s posting hyping Sugarjack’s luxury $779 diaper bags, I thought I’d bring things down a notch and focus on another small, new designer making diaper bags that are equally chic, but available for about half the price (which, I know, is still decadent for a bag that is likely to transport poop on a regular basis. but your diaper bag will be your constant companion for the next few years, so you’d better love it).

Danzo Baby, based in New York and founded by a married couple with young children, has designed minimalist, functional diaper bags made of nylon or canvas and trimmed in leather. Danzo bags come in several different styles, my favorites being the colorblocked nylon Retro Bag and the nylon Hobo Bag, both pictured above. The entire collection is available in the line’s online boutique and prices range between USD $200 and USD $400. This new line has been picked up by the likes of Barneys and Fred Segal, so we are sure to see these bags dangling from the arms of celebrity mommies very soon.

While Danzo’s bags are clearly lovely to look at, they are really all about diaper bag organization. In fact, there is a patent-pending “Danzo Diaper Bag System.” Danzo bags zipper all the way down the sides like a suitcase, so you can actually spread your diaper bag out and organize it (oh, and clean it). The inside of the bag then has clear, plastic pockets with interchangeable velcro labels offering organizational options like “diapers” or “pacifiers” or “medical supplies” or “phone” or even “make-up” and “lip gloss” (yeah, right). Danzo is offering the ultimate in diaper bag organization–of course, that’s nice, but in the end, we all care most about how the bags look on our arms or hanging from our strollers. And I think they look great…

Decadent Monday is back! It took a brief hiatus during the post-holiday sales, but the spring collections are slowly being released and there are many items popping up these days that are worthy of a pregnant women’s decadence.

Perhaps the most obvious one is your new diaper bag. The diaper bag is going to be your constant companion from birth through potty training, so it is understandably a very momentous purchase. Unfortunately, choosing a diaper bag often involves a good bit of trial and error, so I find it is an item about which you should seek advice before purchasing. My own hard-earned advice is simple: go big…as in size. Spend less than $100 or spend more than $500…just make sure that you have a bag big enough for your needs. I have tossed many, many diaper bags for being inadequately sized, including the Louis Vuitton diaper bag, which I loved to look at, but absolutely hated carrying, as it appeared to be sized for a mom who didn’t need to carry much more than a bottle and a few extra diapers. I am not that mom.

I’ll be posting additional diaper bag suggestions later this week in various price ranges, but on Decadent Monday, I must introduce you all to the new and extremely desirable SugarJack Diaper Bags.  Just released out of England in 2011 and available to American shoppers via their online boutique, SugarJack’s diaper bags look like designer handbags, but are actually very functional diaper bags in camouflage. Inside each of these bags is a removeable “baby organizer” compartment that can be taken out and washed whenever necessary, protecting your new, gorgeous designer bag from the inevitable, messy spills that will definitely take place inside any diaper bag. On those very rare occasions when you might be leaving the house without your baby, you can simply remove the organizer and use the bag as a handbag.

There are, of course, numerous designer diaper bags out there, but I am lusting after these in particular, because they are just huge.
The oversized Rebecca is 18″ wide and 16″ high and also has two very large front pockets for additional storage.
The chocolate brown leather Oliver is a bit smaller and is part of SugarJack’s Limited Edition Collection, but even so, it still comes in at a nice 15 inches high and nearly 14 inches wide.

The "Rebecca"

The "Oliver"

SugarJack’s prices are, well, decadent. The bags start at USD $549 and range up to USD $779 for pieces from the new Limited Edition Collection. I haven’t made the commitment yet myself. By Baby #5, one doesn’t really expect a sparkling “push gift,” but I am cautiously hoping my husband miraculously shows up in my hospital room with one of these beauties after I’ve been cut open for the third time and given him his fifth child. Here’s hoping for miracles…

Kate Spade Cabana Stripe Baby Bag

Kate Spade Stevie Baby Bag

If you’ve had your eye on one of those Kate Spade diaper bags in recent months, today and tomorrow are the days to snatch one up. The Kate Spade website is offering 25% off sitewide today and tomorrow with promo code “FFSPR11.” Kate Spade’s nylon diaper bags normally cost between USD $350 and $500 and the only place I’ve ever seen any on sale is at a New York City sample sale, where they vanished within mere minutes.

Kate Spade Essex Scout Bag

And of course, even if you are pregnant and stuck in the “Baby Items’ section, it doesn’t mean you must use the promo code to buy a diaper bag. The hot pink Kate Spade Essex Scout bag I’ve been eyeing in recent weeks is already sold out today, but I like it in this bright citronella color, especially at 25% off. It’s also available in bright orange and a very nice subtle bone colors.

Definitely no dirty diapers or used boogie wipes allowed in this baby.

I am increasingly disillusioned by Gilt, but as of noon today, the sample sale site is staging a Storksak sample sale. There isn’t much to pick from, but a few of Storksak’s more popular diaper bags, such as the Emily, the Olivia, and the Alison are currently available. Click here to join Gilt if you aren’t already a member. I would check it out, you may get lucky, and actually be able to purchase something from the site (recently, everything I covet on Gilt seems to be sold out before the sale even starts).

Does the quest for the ideal diaper bag ever end? After my nearly four years of diaper bag shopping, I would think so. But as much as I am now content to carry my super-durable Double Duo SkipHop because it is the most practical way to carry diapers and accompanying paraphernalia for four toddlers, I do still long for something just as big but a bit more…well, attractive. During my recent tour of maternity showrooms and boutiques here in New York City, however, I came across OiOi diaper bags and fell in love with OiOi’s brand new Tote Sack Diaper Bag, which was recently released for Winter 2010.

I spotted this bag from across one of the showrooms and was immediately drawn to its size. At 15″ high and 13″ wide, this is a sizeable bag. As it turns out, it also appears to be just as durable as the trusty SkipHop. It is made from canvas, but is then completely laminated to ensure resistance to spit-up, dirty diapers, spilled apple juice, etc. It has the typical amenities–wipe case, changing pad, bottle holder. But I particularly like the shape of this bag because it is not only large, but it is deep. There are certain items that must be carried in a diaper bag that a mom hopefully doesn’t need to access that often, such as extra clothing, emergency toys, or a change of underpants for the reluctant toilet trainer (I carry several of these). It is nice to be able to store those in the bottom of your diaper bag, without having to rummage through them every time you need a bottle or a diaper. I was also pleasantly surprised at the price of the new Tote Sack Diaper Bag, which retails for only USD $139.99. After that unexpected news, I immediately purchased one here at DiaperBags.com and very much look forward to carrying it this spring. It may not completely replace the SkipHop, but it will be nice to have something a bit more fun to carry once in a while. As of now, this bag only comes in the chocolate-brown butterfly pattern pictured at left.

And, by the way, if you aren’t in the market for a gargantuan-sized diaper bag, make sure to check out OiOi’s line of messenger-style and hobo-style diaper bags on their website here. I hadn’t been very familiar with the line until last week, but I was impressed by some of their selections. They are an Australian-based company and try very hard to make sure their diaper bags look nothing like diaper bags. I was also pleasantly surprised by their prices.
