Celebrity Fashion

It’s official. Jessica Simpson will be launching her own maternity line. Jessica claims she wants to take advantage quickly of all she has learned about maternity fashion and channel that into “breezy, everyday” clothing for the rest of us. Jessica Simpson Maternity will sell at Destination Maternity and at Macy’s and will, according to Jessica’s press release, have a “vintage ’70′s feel” and be “flattering to your baby bump.” If skintight animal prints and billowing muumuus are what you consider flattering maternity wear then ladies, you are in luck, because Jessica’s new line will launch later this year, soon enough for the newly pregnant to purchase it. Prices will start at $36.

Perhaps it will be tasteful. Perhaps it will be nothing like the clothing she wore during her pregnancy. Perhaps I will love it and suggest you all run out and buy it immediately. Or, perhaps not. Regardless, I can’t wait.

I blogged a couple of weeks ago about the casual, fun Summer 2012 maternity collection released by Canadian designer Jules & Jim and have since received my new Jules & Jim Women’s Long Comfortable Tube Dress. If there is a day at the pool or the beach in your near future, order this cotton-blend dress and have it ready to go in your beach bag. I admire pregnant women who flaunt it in their swimsuits, but I speak from years of cumulative experience when I tell you that no matter how confident you are, there are days during your pregnancy and afterward you will not feel bikini-ready. This easy-to-wear, easy-to-wash dress is for those days. I anticipate a full summer of those days this year, so I am already ordering this dress in the second color to ensure there is always one in my beach bag.

And don’t forget that Isabella Oliver’s Spree Sale continues today with 43% off the entire maternity and nursing line. The promotional code today is “SPREE43.”

4 DAYS ONLY – SAVE 35% to 47% OFF on all Maternity Clothing at the Isabella Oliver Spree Sale. (Offer valid From May 14 to May 17, 2012 only) Be sure to check daily for the new promo code & qualifying details!

As an avid reader of fashion blogs and magazines, I am often confronted with fashion editors’ versions of the “Top Ten Maternity Style Must-Haves,” which tend to catalogue a series of very predictable maternity fashion purchases. Rarely do any of the editors go above and beyond to find a cutting edge piece of maternity fashion or something from a new, unknown designer because really, why would they need to? Pregnant women aren’t really the target audience for high-end fashion magazines.

I usually just ignore these lists, but on Tuesday, Rachel Zoe released her own personal Top Ten Transitional Maternity Picks and I simply cannot let this go. I love Rachel Zoe–her show, her clothes, her shoes, her baby boy’s somewhat disturbing wardrobe–I love it all. But this is a woman very much out of touch with reality.

First of all, there is only one piece of true maternity clothing included in her list. That’s fine, she’s a stylist, it’s her job to go out and find clothing that her clients wouldn’t think of buying on their own. But suggesting we all buy the Rachel Zoe Kristen Military Blazer? The first lesson of maternity wear shopping–do not buy anything that accentuates the natural waist because it is the very first thing to go. Of all the black blazers Rachel might select, is a $450 fitted military style blazer with a cinched waist and peplum flare really the best option? I recognize it is from her own collection and she wants people to buy it, even if most of us haven’t actually had a waist since some time in 2011. Isn’t she doing unknowing pregnant women a disservice in suggesting they buy this jacket?

Rachel also suggests pregnant women go out and purchase these $295 Elizabeth and James Sibil Wedge Platform Sandals. Um, Rachel? These wegdes have a 5″ heel. I am all for trying to preserve your sense of style during pregnancy and trying to shove your swollen feet into a pair of your pre-pregnancy heels once in a while, but including a pair of 5-inch heels in a maternity must-have list?
Look at poor pregnant Kourtney’s face in this photo. She is wearing 5-inch heels and luckily, the paparazzi was there to catch her before she bit it right there on the steps of Bryant Park. The rest of us do not have the luxury of being trailed by paparazzi. Rachel, it really makes a lot more sense for us to go out and buy a pair of gorgeous flats once we find out we’re preggers, don’t you think?

Rachel is a valuable resource for numerous things, however maternity wear is not one of them. Read her must-have list exclusively for entertainment value. Where else would you find someone suggesting that a $625 Alexander McQueen bag without any interior or exterior pockets and absolutely no baby-friendly features makes the ideal diaper bag? Where do you think Rachel shoves her dirty diapers, filthy bibs, and soaked breast pads?

10pm Update–Late today, Pinkyotto posted the Great Gatsby Dress for sale in its online boutique (USD $188). Click here to own Kourtney’s look for yourself…

I cannot get enough of yesterday’s photo of a seven-months-pregnant Kourtney Kardashian nearly toppling over in her five-inch Christian Louboutins, partly because of the priceless expression on her face, but also because I really do love her dress. Kourtney is wearing the red pleated Great Gatsby Dress, designed by NYC-based Pinkyotto. Sadly, the Great Gatsby dress is a Fall 2011 piece and according to a salesperson I spoke to this morning, is no longer available in the Pinkyotto Boutiques.

But I loved this flirty look so much, I find myself once again desiring to replicate Kourtney’s look and have been scouting for similar dresses. Here are a few options…

Erin Fetherston’s Plisse Shift Dress looks remarkably similar to Kourtney’s, though it is available in ”popsicle pink,” rather than red. This spring, popsicle pink sounds even better than red, to be honest. This dress is also available in a more subtle black and ivory online at Saks. And don’t let the length on the model at left scare you off. The dress hangs 21″ from the natural waist, so it is not exceptionally short, as it appears on this exceptionally tall model.

In the “Look for Less” Category, ASOS offers a sexier, strapless version of Kourtney’s pleated dress, the red silk Vero Moda Drape Dress. Starting today, this dress is currently 50% off in ASOS’s mid-season sale, discounted from USD $214 to USD $107.

Yet again, I am recommending we all go out and dress up like a Kardashian sister. This is getting to be a disturbing habit. If you buy one of these dresses, I do suggest that all of you in the third trimester leave the 5-inch heels at home. Most of us do not have paparazzi around to catch us when we tip over. But thank god they were there, right, we wouldn’t have this photo otherwise.

I really do hate to keep recommending that we all dress up like the Kardashians, but with such a poor fashion showing among pregnant Hollywood these days (Jessica? Hillary? Maggie?), Kourtney Kardashian has curiously become this blog’s fashion role model in recent weeks. She does seem to have kicked her fashion taste up a notch or two since her last pregnancy and she is consistently showing up in tasteful, well-conceived outfits now that she is a good 5 months into her pregnancy. Is a stylist responsible? Maybe. Or perhaps Kourtney simply stopped taking fashion advice from her sisters and her mom.

Regardless, Kourtney showed up at the Vanity Fair Oscars party last night in a white Raoul Penelope Gown and she looked simply stunning. Raoul is a Singapore-based line that I have fallen in love with since it hit the states about a year ago. The pieces are clean and classic, and the prices are not entirely unattainable. Raoul’s silk and leather Penelope Gown has graced the red carpet a few times this award season, most recently on Oscar nominee Viola Davis, but Kourtney demonstrated how maternity-friendly it could be.

If you are the type of woman who is scoring invites to parties like the Vanity Fair Oscar party, you can pull off a white gown without too many people accusing you of looking too bridal.

Not necessarily so for the rest of us, so I actually prefer this navy blue version of the Raoul Penelope Gown, which is available for USD $955 at Neiman Marcus. This gown hits all the right fashion targets for the spring season, as it incorporates colorblocking and leather trim at the neckline into one lovely piece.

Do you have a spring or summer wedding for which you need a dress? Choose this dress and you are likely to be the most fashion-forward lady at the event, pregnant or not.

When I heard that model Molly Sims was pregnant, I was naturally curious as to what she would be wearing every day, so I signed up for a daily newsletter from her website, mollysims.com. I was hoping I would be treated to thoughtful daily updates regarding her maternity wardrobe. That has not been the case. There are a few scattered photos of her maternity style, but there are unfortunately far too many postings about what she likes to eat while pregnant, such as kale and veggie-infused water. Notiwthstanding the fact that I don’t necesssarily believe that is what she wants to be eating at five months pregnant, I really don’t care and would like simply to know what she’s wearing every day. Molly does mention that she is craving Girl Scout cookies, but doesn’t actually admit to eating any of them.

A recent paparazzi photo, however, showed Molly, who is about 5 months pregnant, wearing the maternity-friendly black Isabel Marant Bettyle Maxi Skirt. Maxi skirts are a great go-to basic during pregnancy and beyond, but one has to be careful when purchasing them. They must have elastic around the waist, rather than a zipper closing and the more elastic, the better.
This particular maxi skirt from the uber-hip French designer’s more wallet-friendly line, Etoile, is ideal because it has a wide smocked elastic waistband and also has a drawstring. The skirt is 100% cotton, is completely lined, and is available in black, as well as beige at MyTheresa.com and navy blue at Barneys.com.

Like most French clothing, Marant’s pieces tend to be small, so definitely size up from your pre-pregnancy size. The skirt is priced at USD $285.

What are you going to wear on Tuesday night? Perhaps you are going out for your very last childless Valentine’s Day celebration? Or perhaps you booked a babysitter weeks ago and have a well-orchestrated evening of non-alcoholic revelry planned with your partner?

Either way, plan to do so in Hatch Collection’s red silk maternity Dinner Party Dress. This dress is the ideal V-day dress, whether you are sporting a barely there baby bump or whether you could potentially give birth on Valentine’s Day. I have been wearing this dress virtually nonstop since I purchased it in the fall.

During the second trimester, it worked best with a belt over the bump, high-heeled boots or shoes, and an optional cropped cardigan or leather jacket. More recently, I’ve been wearing it loose with high, flat boots and a cardigan (bare arms are no longer an option). This eye-catching red dress is a surefire way to garner compliments from complete strangers about how much pregnancy agrees with you and I don’t know about you, but those seem increasingly hard to come by after 35 weeks.

This dress does have a low cut V-neck, so I took it to the tailor and had the spaghetti straps slightly shortened to prevent unforeseen exhibitionism. The dress also comes in navy, black, mushroom, and charcoal-colored silk, as well as a more casual striped jersey version. The navy striped jersey dress is on my spring postpartum must-have list. The silk renditions are priced at USD $348, the jersey at USD $248 in Hatch’s online boutique.

And, this very same dress was worn by Jennifer Garner at her InStyle shoot for the January cover of the magazine. I wonder if she’ll be wearing it out with Ben on Tuesday night. I admire Jennifer Garner for being a Hollywood A-lister, but not being afraid to look truly pregnant when she is expecting and donning real maternity clothing. I’d love it if Jennifer sent her hand-me-down maternity clothing over to Jessica Simpson once she is through with it, with a simple note attached that read, “For your own good, Jessica, please wear these.”

Of the Kardashians, I find Kourtney the least offensive. I don’t watch their shows, I don’t buy any of their products, but I do spot them in fashion magazines often and Kourtney seems to me the most down-to-earth and least ridiculous. Everything is relative, of course, and I recognize that I have no idea what I am talking about when it comes to which Kardashian should be my favorite.

I do know what I am talking about when it comes to maternity fashion, however, and with Kourtney, I like what I see so far with her second pregnancy. I thought she looked incredible and, dare I write, tasteful on New Year’s Eve in black sequined DvF. Her first pregnancy was punctuated with a few too many skintight dresses that were not maternity friendly, despite what her clueless sisters may have told her. But this time around, she seems to be playing things down a bit and I am cautiously impressed by her choices. Perhaps she is watching Jessica Simpson closely and using her as a guide to what not to wear when pregnant.

Just this week, Kourtney was spotted in Splendid’s Double Stripe Loose Knit Tunic in the Cream/Heather color combination. This loose-fitting rayon tunic is also available in cranberry/navy and mocha/heather in the Splendid Women’s Boutique and retails for USD $88. I like it exactly how Kourtney is wearing it–paired with a camisole, skinny maternity jeans, and boots (and the $2000 Celine luggage tote doesn’t hurt the look either).

This kind of ridiculousness is worthy of a late-night Saturday post…

Jessica Simpson was out and about yesterday in an ill-fitting green dress discussing her plans to launch a maternity line. While discussing her new line, she revealed that she has decided not to wear maternity clothing herself because she doesn’t “really love maternity stuff.” Here’s the thing, Jessica. We all like our regular clothing more than we like our maternity clothing–hence the reason most women don’t shop for maternity clothing unless they have to. But as pregnant women, we also embrace reality at a certain point and realize that regular clothing not only doesn’t fit us anymore, but even if we can wriggle into it, it doesn’t look nice or flattering.

As many of your recent ensembles indicate, you have clearly not embraced such reality yet, despite clear evidence that you, more than many of us, really do need to be wearing maternity clothing. I fault the people with whom you surround yourself for allowing you to wear get-ups like these in public, and that’s too bad. But your clear belief that maternity clothing isn’t good enough for you to wear, but is good enough for you to design and then sell to all of us non-celebrities really annoys me.  There are so many talented maternity designers struggling to keep themselves afloat in the market today, you could at least give a few of their pieces a chance. Your wearing just one piece of maternity clothing could guarantee increased sales for these struggling designers. It’s good enough for Jessica Alba, Jessica Garner, and Selma Blair and apparently good enough for all of us to buy from you–is there a reason it’s not good enough for you to wear?

So, I am adding you to my maternity designer shit list before I’ve even viewed your new maternity line. Although, to be honest, based on what you’re wearing these days, it’s a pretty safe bet your line is going to end up on that list anyway. You join the likes of Heidi Klum and Nicole Richie, other celebrities who have squandered their opportunities to use their dubiously acquired fame to design something truly forward-thinking and fashionable for the maternity market.

And to all those talented maternity designers out there who toil away creating clothes that fit and flatter pregnant women, send Jessica a sample or two. She’s not due for a few more months and she is a naturally voluptuous woman. Try as she might, she’s not going to be able to shop in the non-maternity aisle for much longer.

When I first saw this photo of a very pregnant Selma Blair strolling LA in this stunning maxi dress, I did a thorough search for it online, couldn’t find it for sale anywhere, and simply assumed it wasn’t actually a maternity dress, but rather a designer dress some doting designer had converted just for pregnant Selma and not for the rest of us. I’ve kept my eyes out since then, because I am obviously a bit obsessive when it comes to shopping and damn, I really wanted this dress. I love the dark colors and love the way it drapes on Selma despite her being incredibly pregnant. If I could only figure out where to buy it, PF and her readers could also look so effortlessly fabulous in our third trimester.

And then last night, I simply happened upon the Selma Maxi Dress for sale in Queen Bee’s online maternity boutique. And miraculously, the dress is not only a true maternity dress, but is priced at only USD $136 and designed right here in the USA by LA-based maternity designer 2 Chix. Of course, it’s already sold out here, so you’ll have to order it from Australia. But having to pay $25 for flat rate international shipping gives you a reason to order something else from Queen Bee, Sydney’s premier maternity boutique.
Queen Bee stocks many maternity designers you’ve already heard of, as well as a few local Australian maternity designers you probably haven’t. Make sure to peruse the maternity pieces from Australian designers Fillyboo and Lil Designs. Yes, it’s summer in Australia, so these are warm weather pieces, but I’ve seen many of the Spring/Summer 2012 lines here in the US already and you won’t see anything like these on-trend dresses and blouses at your local Pea in a Pod.

Pregnant Kate Hudson

This fall and winter, maxi skirts provide yet another opportunity for pregnant fashionistas to bring current runway trends into the maternity fashion arena. Maxi skirts are popping up everywhere, often paired with high boots and loose-fitting sweaters or tops. This is a high-fashion look pregnant women should be embracing this winter–the opportunity to wear a long skirt that camouflages your entire lower half and pair it with comfortable flat shoes or boots, while still looking entirely on trend? Please sign me up.

Of course, there are some key rules that must be abided by in order to make sure the trend works for maternity style–well, in this case, there is really only one hard and fast rule. An elastic waistband. Comb your favorite fashion boutiques for the ideal skirt, indulge in the vibrant colors designers have released for winters, but absolutely do not buy a maxi skirt for matenity wear unless it has an elastic wasitband. Usually, product descriptions will detail whether the skirt has a zipper closure (meaning no elastic) or a full elastic waistband. Be patient and hold out for the full elastic. I experimented with a drawstring-waisted maxi skirt this past weekend and it did not go well. You need a full elastic waist to make sure the skirt stays up and holds in place underneath your bump, especially if you are wearing tights underneath. You also need to go up one size from your pre-pregnancy size to ensure room for extra girth. And try and stay away from maxi skirts with slits. In your current condition, you don’t need a high, sexy slit in your skirt, you’re just asking for a wardrobe malfunction.

Nicholas Pleated Maxi Skirt

Splendid’s Charcoal Maxi Skirt / Dress is a basic cotton maxi skirt with an elastic, foldover waistband. If you need something a bit dressier, Australian designer Nicholas’s Maisie Pleated Skirt is a fun option with a full elastic waistband. I am wearing this Nicholas skirt often these days–the blue looks great with a basic white maternity tee or tank on top. I’ve also ordered Rachel Pally’s Stripe Rib Maxi Skirt in black and white jersey. I just loved this skirt, I am hoping it will work with a simple black maternity top.

Rachel Pally Striped Skirt

Once you’ve managed to find the pefect maxi skirt, however, your options for tops are limitless. A fitted maternity tank or camisole works well with a hip belt and can be paired with a cardigan for the winter. Or, opt for a long-sleeved maternity tee or sweater on top. I prefer a fitted top with a billowing maxi skirt but a few celebs (like Kate Hudson) feel differently and go for the bohemian-esque blousy top with long skirt look.

Many maternity designers have released maternity maxi skirts this season, but I find they don’t fit any differently than a non-maternity maxi skirt with an elastic waistband. I’d rather just choose a skirt I really like for the color and the style and buy it one size larger than have to settle for one of the more limited maternity versions. It’s not often that a pregnant fashionista doesn’t have to settle, so embrace the opportunity.
